Surgical Technician II

The Surgery Center at Akron General Bath Health & Wellness Center provides patients with outpatient surgical options close to home. Our highly skilled surgeons use advanced minimally invasive surgeries to provide the best surgical options for patients. Procedures offered include general surgery, ENT, endoscopy, foot and ankle, gynecology, hand and wrist, hip and knee joint replacements, shoulder, spine, sports medicine and urology. 


A caregiver in this position works 7:00am – 3:30pm 


A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Assist the surgeons in the scrub capacity and with circulating responsibilities under the direct supervision of a registered nurse in a manner that is consistent with established standards of practice. 

  • Scrub, gown and glove according to established policies and procedures. 

  • Organize and maintain instruments and supplies in such a manner that promotes safe and efficient transfer to and from surgeons and assistants. 

  • Assist and anticipate the needs of the surgeon with regard to instruments, sutures, sponges and supplies. 

  • Assist in the preparation and draping of the patient and operative area. 

  • Maintain aseptic technique at all times. 

  • Perform appropriate needle, sponge, and instrument counts with the registered nurse and report correctness and discrepancies according to standard. 

  • Assist in the application of dressings and casts. 

  • Assemble all instruments and equipment for decontamination according to policies and procedures. 

  • Assist in the maintenance of equipment to ensure proper function and safety. 

  • Assist with routine and terminal cleaning and other housekeeping duties as directed. 

  • Apply electrocautery and instrumentation directly to tissues as appropriate during surgical intervention. 

  • Assist by handling tissue in dissection and suturing, utilizing appropriate instruments. 

  • Provide site exposure of relevant areas via mechanical or manual assistance. 

  • Perform subcutaneous and skin closures and apply post-operative casts, splints, slings, etc. 

  • Assist in the transportation of patients. 

  • Function in all areas of central processing to promote efficient utilization of instruments and equipment as needed. 

  • Assist in the preparation of procedure/case carts for surgical cases. 

  • Complete mandatory education and training in order to maintain competencies, requirements, certification and/or licensure.  


Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Graduate from an approved surgical technology program or equivalent.  

  • CST certification or willing to obtain within one year of employment.  

  • One year of experience as a Surgical Technologist.  

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).  

  • Knowledgeable of and competent in suturing techniques.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking.

  • Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
