Overview:

As part of the Mortgage Originations organization, this position will be responsible for consulting with, educating on, and supporting the execution of all first line risk programs, promoting an environment of risk awareness and risk ownership across the business unit while adhering to the Company’s Risk Appetite and Corporate Strategy.  The Strategic Risk Manager will provide guidance and coaching to the Mortgage team on processes and policies to ensure appropriate and effective collaboration and partnership between the business unit and all Compliance and Risk Management departments.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the primary point of contact within the Mortgage business unit for all risk and compliance related items and partners with all relevant stakeholders to facilitate a collaborative approach

  • Ensures timely identification and escalation of risks and issues and consults with BU management and first line risk partners surrounding key risk management issues to ensure the efficient and accurate execution of risk programs

  • Assists in the review and enhancement of internal controls, ensuring control testing is in place and results are in line with the Control Standards

  • Maintains and utilizes strong understanding of business operations, risks, controls and related laws and regulatory guidance

  • Supports the BU’s participation in relevant risk governance group meetings

  • Provides necessary feedback and coordinates on relevant governance documents to support BU activities and manage risk

  • Assists in preparation of materials for audits and provides support to risk partners

  • Works with senior management to execute the implementation of effective program policies, standards, and procedures

  • Develop, implement, and maintain a risk-based change management framework and strategy

  • Collaborate on Mortgage initiatives and the development of new strategies to mitigate risk across the organization’s business unit

Supervisory/Managerial Responsibilities:

  • Manages a team of 1-5 individual contributors

Education and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent work experience

  • Minimum of 8 years’ proven project management experience

Education and Experience Preferred:

  • Deep understanding of the Mortgage regulatory environment

  • Experience working with loan origination software (Encompass)

  • One or more years of leadership experience

  • Deep understanding of the mortgage industry (origination, underwriting, processing, etc.) coupled with risk/compliance/regulatory, product/project management, and/or business transformation experience

  • Experience with any of the following: mortgage risk, audit, credit risk management, process improvement/change management, remediation plans, or similar

  • Master’s degree

  • Strong knowledge of project management methodology

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, particularly an ability to negotiate, influence and gain consensus

  • Regularly communicates verbally and in writing with executive management on status of initiatives, in a professional and understandable manner

  • Excellent problem-solving skills

  • Ability to work individually as well as a member of a team

  • Self-motivated, results-driven and well-organized individual

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and work under time constraints in support of various assignments

  • Strong interpersonal skills necessary for business partner relationships within and outside the organization

  • Ability to build mutual trust and encourage respect; open to diverse points of view

This is a hybrid position requiring 2 days in-office per week.  Eligible candidates must live within commuting distance to one of our four offices below.

M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $100,611.94 - $167,686.57 Annual (USD). The successful candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
