The Birmingham office opened in 2015 and has a number of practice areas including Corporate/Commercial, Disputes, Finance and Real Estate, as well as our Legal Delivery Centre and Business teams. The office has recently trebled in size and moved into a new fitted out space in the Colmore Building.

Department Description

The Information Technology Department is responsible for the implementation, provision and support of all Information and Technology services within the firm.  The department is a business services function that supports and contributes to the objectives of the legal practice.  Members of this department are expected to fit into the firm's culture and be committed to providing a high quality of service to our customers.

Role Overview

The role will report to the Senior Manager, Core Services and Platforms, responsible for all aspects of support of the firm’s core services and platforms environment leveraging Windows Active Directory, Citrix and other services to ensure that the service is maintained to high standards required to provide resilient services to the firm and its clients, liaising with other teams and departments as necessary.

The core services role is responsible globally for the development, management, operation and full lifecycle of all core Infrastructure including but not limited to Domain Controllers/Active Directory/DNS/DHCP/Group Policy, Citrix, Client Desktop Engineering and configuration, whether hosted on premise or in third party locations operating under contracts with Hogan Lovells. 

The role will work with services hosted on premise, in the cloud, or in third party locations operating under contracts with Hogan Lovells.

Key Responsibilities / Accountabilities

  • The Senior Core Services and Platforms engineer is expected to have an excellent working knowledge of all aspects of the Technology Infrastructure, supported by the wider team.

  • In addition, in order to effectively support the services running on the firm's technology infrastructure, a good general knowledge of all applications and services provided to the firm is required.

  • The Senior Core Services and Platforms Engineer is expected to act as a team lead, coach and mentor to other team members. Deputising for the Senior Manager, they will assist in handling operational issues, orchestrating project, operational assignments, and liaising with other IT and wider business teams as needed.

  • Proactively identify and resolve infrastructure issues before they impact the user/customer.

  • Provide input into the overall management of the Core Services and Platforms team, including resourcing, budgeting, technology roadmaps, tasks and the oversight of all Core Services and Platforms initiatives.

  • Represent the team in the broader I.T. organisation, including in project, supplier and management meetings, reporting progress on issue resolution and major project work.

  • Create and maintain standards, procedures and policies to enhance new and existing services whilst ensuring Change Control and Service Management principles are followed.

  • Oversee and manage system changes, deployment of applications, monitoring of service health and troubleshooting problems whilst ensuring a good service is maintained.

  • Ensure effective Capacity Planning, Reporting and Monitoring processes are in place to cover services within the remit of the Core Services and Platforms team as defined in the Terms of Reference.

  • To create detailed documentation of all systems and procedures that are relevant to the service including RCA’s, KBA’s and QRG’s to enhance the support of the services provided by the team.

  • Contribute to departmental strategy, manage product lifecycles, help develop and maintain strategic and tactical roadmap for all database, web and supporting systems and services, making sure that they are future-proofed and that the organisation derives maximum value from investment in these technologies and services.

  • Maintaining understanding of technology, trends in industry, and keeping up with manufacturer roadmaps in alignment to firm and service needs.

  • Active Directory including OU design, Group Policy Preferences, Group Policy Objects, DHCP, DNS, WINS, PKI certificate Domain Controller management and Roles management as well as SSO and authentication systems.

  • The global support of Azure hosted services listed below and their integration with all products and applications across the estate:

    • Conditional Access Policies

    • Role/Group Management

    • Entra Connect

    • Microsoft Authenticator

    • On-Prem Active Directory

    • Group Policy/Intune Policies

    • Windows Defender for Identity

  • Working with InfoSec to ensure compliance across the company’s server estate.

  • Citrix – XEN App published Desktop & Published application creation and management, Citrix Design and Implementation, NetScaler’s and Storefront servers (desirable).

  • Be a trusted advisor for the IT Core Services and Platforms team making suggestions and recommendations to resolve issues and improve services.

Experience, Knowledge and Training

  • Experience and proven ability in undertaking effective resource and workload management to achieve team goals and priorities, using project management techniques and ensuring timely reporting to senior management.

  • Must have five (5+) years of experience applicable to the role described above in an enterprise environment.

  • Ensures full understanding of departmental processes and procedures taking steps to close gaps in knowledge.

  • Be a lead for project and BAU engagements to deliver a first-rate service.

  • Evidence of Advance Microsoft Certified training of MS Active Directory, Certificate Management, Citrix, Microsoft Azure technologies or equivalent experience.

  • ITIL v3 Foundation certification or able to demonstrate working.

  • Customer-oriented experience in a global enterprise environment.

  • Extensive experience and understanding of PowerShell scripting – creation, testing and modification.

  • Applied knowledge of high-availability and disaster recovery options and Clustering.

  • Ability to perform Server migrations, upgrades and application migrations security patching. Experience in migrations to Azure services are desirable.

  • Deep knowledge and strong experience of managing global infrastructure, including load balancing best practices. F5 BigIP knowledge is desirable. 

  • Highly skilled at analytical and problem solving with the ability to provide practical and creative solutions using automation.
