The Meharry Medical College School of Medicine is seeking individuals to fill an educator-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level. The Faculty position will perform usual faculty duties in a major academic Department. The Assistant Professor should have a minimum 2 years postdoctoral experience beyond the Ph.D. degree in Cancer Biology, Physiology, and Cardiovascular Biology, Microbiology or related sciences as well as possess academic skills in one or more specialized areas of Biochemistry or molecular biology, cellular biology or cancer biology at a level and/or experience above that of an Assistant Professor. He/she is expected to maintain funded research programs of high quality as well as participate in the graduate and professional school teaching program of the basic science areas. Renewal of faculty appointment is contingent upon continuous maintenance and/or improvement in the skills.

Daily Operations

Teaching: Teaching assignments originate from the departmental chairperson in time (ca. 1-3 months) for appropriate courses(s).  Assignment will be consistent with that defined by annual contract.

Research: An Assistant Professor should exhibit acceptable publication record in main line basic science fields or molecular biology journals and maintain active short-range and long-range research programs.  An average of 2-3 publications in refereed journals is expected per 12-month period. Minimally, fifty percent (50%) of time shall be spent for research, with the clear understanding that research funds for salary support will be generated in proportion to the time released for research

Service: As defined by Annual Contract and Faculty Appointment, and Tenure Documents.

Detailed Description of Position: The standard duties of an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, & Physiology at Meharry include: 

  •  Primary teaching responsibility in Microbiology with potential to contribute to teaching, training and service responsibilities related to Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, Physiology, and Cardiovascular Biology.
  • Minimally, fifty percent (50%) of time shall be spent for research, with the clear understanding that research funds for salary support will be generated in proportion to the time released for research.  
  • Administrative and faculty responsibility shall be as determined or approved by the Departmental Chairperson.    
  • Other specific assignments and responsibilities, as designated and delegated by the Departmental Chairperson and as reflected in the Appointment Contract.

Renewal of appointment is subject to annual review by the Chairperson and the Dean of Medicine.  Renewal of appointment is contingent upon continuous maintenance and/or improvement in appropriate skills.

Must have initiative and ability to originate new and useful ideas pertaining to responsibilities and to complete assigned duties on time.

Must have potential for contribution to or collaboration with other Investigators in research in modern biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, cardiovascular biology or molecular genetics, and execute said potential.

Other:  Reports directly to the Chairman of Microbiology, Immunology and Physiology.

                                                                                                                                       

Required Skills

  • Active participation in local, regional, national, or international professional organizations related to the individual’s discipline
  • Previous administrative responsibility within a medical school department or a program of medical education
  • Experience with teaching subjects related to scientific methods, the philosophy of science, clinician-scientist collaboration, and the role of the scientist in medicine and society
  • Demonstrated extramural interests outside of bio-medicine or medical education
  • Scholarly work within the area of the individual’s discipline demonstrated by publication, presentation, or recognition as an authority.
  • Established track record of mentoring
  • Ability to demonstrate a potential for scholarly and creative activity that would merit appointment and potential for promotion in an education-based foundational science department.  

Required Education and Experience

  • PhD in Microbiology or related field or MD with basic science teaching expertise.
  • Ability to present unequivocal evidence of excellent and effective teaching.
