Director Global Labor Relations

Job Description Summary

AAM has an exciting opportunity for a dedicated leader who will be responsible for and oversee all global labor relations activity! The Director of Global Labor Relations will build upon and lead a comprehensive and effective labor strategy, including continuing positive employee relations initiatives to strengthen the long-term relationship with its 20,000 + associates. The Director also advises and collaborates with senior leadership and members of the Human Resources team on applicable labor law, the current labor environment and legislative trends. This position will report to the Senior Vice President of Human Resources and is a key partner to operations leadership.

Job Description

  • In partnership with the SVP of HR and Senior Leadership, lead AAM’s labor strategy.
  • Leads risk assessment and mitigation, issue identification and resolution, and positive employee relations initiatives.
  • Serves as the main point of contact for all union-related matters, including collective bargaining, organizing campaigns, petitions, mediation, arbitration and administrative charges.
  • Partners with inside and outside legal counsel as necessary on union-related matters such as mediation, arbitration, administrative hearings, and trials.
  • Develops and leads organizational response to union organizing campaigns and election petitions.
  • Leads the negotiation of collective bargaining agreements.
  • Coordinates the grievance process to ensure contractual rights are upheld.
  • Prepares cases for arbitrations, administrative hearings, and trials.
  • Responsible for providing guidance to corporate departments on business consolidations, outsourcing, and reductions in force which may implicate union workforce.
  • Partners with global, field HR teams for regional labor relations strategy
  • Provide direction to Human Resources and operating leadership on policy and CBA interpretation.
  • Develops and provides training to Human Resources and leadership aimed at building internal capabilities on a wide range of labor/union-related subjects.
  • Leads compliance with federal and state laws regarding labor-related matters.
  • Communicates proactively on labor environment and legislative trends.

Required Skills and Education

  • Required Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Human Resources or related field. Preferred Master's Degree in industrial Relations, labor relations or similar field.
  • The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of increasingly responsible experience in Employee and Labor Relations working extensively with labor unions. The position has significant field-based responsibilities and may require local travel.
  • 5 years of relevant experience in a project management, supervisory, or managerial capacity.
  • Extensive experience with global unions, union organizing campaigns and works councils.
  • Extensive experience negotiating Collective Bargaining Agreements.  Proven experience as First Chair in major contract negotiations.
  • Extensive experience with resolution of grievances and the arbitration process.
  • Ability to translate contracts to coach business leaders in resolving day-to-day issues.
