The below job summary and responsibilities reflects the duties of Assistant General Counsel. The Principal Attorney and Sr. Attorney will differ as fewer skills and/or experience will be required.  The successful candidate will be placed at a level that is commensurate with the candidate's skills and experience.

Position Summary

Provides legal counsel to Xcel Energy and management of Xcel Energy legal services, including outside counsel. Handles complex legal matters on a regular basis, oftentimes requiring creative solutions to challenging legal issues. Viewed as an expert within the company and legal community in designated practice area.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and counsel to Xcel Energy management on complex legal, business, legislation, regulation and strategic matters.

  • Prepares contracts, pleadings, briefs and other documents for business transactions or legal proceedings.

  • Represents Xcel Energy in courts, regulatory agencies and other adjudicatory or adversarial proceedings.

  • May serve in a lead role to provide overall practice expertise and direction of attorneys within area of expertise. May act as primary point of contact for business areas.


Minimum Requirements for Assistant General Counsel (Salary Range: $175,000 - $210,000)

- Juris Doctorate degree from ABA accredited law school.

- Licensed to practice in state where position is located.

- 10+ years of practice in corporate law department, law firm, government practice or equivalent legal experience.

- Leadership experience required.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Utility Experience

- Experience with Administrative Law & Court Proceedings

- Litigation Experience

- Excellent Verbal & Written Communication Skills

- Licensed to practice law in Texas or New Mexico

Minimum Requirements for Principal Attorney (Salary Range: $139,400 - $197,467)

- Juris Doctorate degree from ABA accredited law school.

- 6-10 years of practice in corporate law department, law firm, government practice or equivalent legal experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Utility Experience

- Experience with Administrative Law & Court Proceedings

- Litigation Experience

- Excellent Verbal & Written Communication Skills

- Licensed to practice law in Texas or New Mexico

Minimum Requirements for Sr. Attorney (Salary Range: $105,600 - $150,000; Sr. Attorney is not eligible for the Long Term Incentive benefit.)

- Juris Doctorate degree from ABA accredited law school.

- Licensed to practice in the state in which the position is located.

- 3-6 years of practice in corporate law department, law firm, government practice or equivalent legal experience.

- Superior verbal and written communication skills are required.

Non-Bargaining

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $105,600.00 to $210,000.00 per year
