Position Summary:

The Safety Manager provides safety procedures to ensure compliance with construction standards and safety regulations and promotes safe operating practices and provides effective responses to emergencies. The Safety Manager will assist with developing, coordinating, and implementing occupational health policies and procedures to promote and ensure effective safety operations for BASE.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Enforce safety rules/regulations of Van Metre and apply safe work practices in all job tasks.
  • Identify and eliminate potential safety hazards in the workplace to lessen injury, incident, accident, property damage, and/or environmental spillage.
  • Provide technical and administrative support to Van Metre Safety Committee.
  • Preview projects/sites before work begins to determine safety-related risks.
  • Stop any operation and activity that could harm employee or equipment.
  • Work with Project Management Teams and Field Workers to develop and implement solutions to safety-related issues on project sites.
  • Train company employees in safe work practices and provide training documents to BASE People Operations for recordkeeping purposes.
  • Maintain safety and training certifications.
  • Conduct and record monthly safety meetings.
  • Conduct monthly safety inspections and audits to assess employee compliance with safety regulations. Inspect first aid kits, fire extinguishers, Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) and ladders.
  • Address and abate all safety concerns from monthly site inspections.
  • Review monthly site audits with Area Supervisors/Leads.
  • Review accident and incident reports.
  • Conduct accident investigations.
  • Conduct site inspections at assigned locations.
  • Conduct in-house training sessions on health and safety awareness.
  • Maintain yearly training schedule.
  • Maintain BASE safety records and review with appropriate managers/supervisors.
  • Document safety programs and training in all applicable areas.
  • Annually review all safety policies and procedures with Director of Safety.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and codes.
  • Recommend disciplinary actions for employees/subcontractors who fail to comply with minimum safety standards.
  • Serve as Administrator for Learning Management System and Safety Data Sheets System in Van Metre Safety Management System.
  • Keep Director of Safety comprised of all pertinent events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Competencies:

  • Previous experience in Safety Management.
  • Ability to read and interpret written information.
  • Ability to analyze problems and provide solutions.
  • Ability to work one duty for eight to ten hours.
  • Ability to read tape measure and use air tools.
  • Ability to lift 75 pounds.
  • Ability to access heights via ladders or scaffolding.
  • Ability to provide detailed reports and develop safety procedures.
  • Detail-Oriented.
  • Good recordkeeping abilities.
  • Good understanding of data analysis and risk assessment.
  • Good organizational, leadership, and motivational skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of OSHA standards and regulations pertaining to the specific trade or activity being managed.
  • Patience and the ability to work in high-pressure environments.
  • Extensive attention to detail to distinguish safety hazards.
  • Knowledge of the specific skilled trade or type of work that their company does.
  • Professional appearance and behavior.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Other Essential Skills & Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or its equivalent preferred.
  • OSHA 30 HR Construction, Forklift, Machinery preferred.
  • 2+ years of previous Safety Supervisor/Manager experience.
  • Proven ability to apply math, writing, and language skills.

  • Salary: $90,000 - $100,000 annually (Pay is commensurate with experience, education, training, and skills)
