Role Overview

The Global Markets Analyst role is an entry-level position within the Catalyst Program, designed to provide hands-on exposure to the dynamic environment of Global Markets. This role blends business engagement and market-facing exposure, offering candidates opportunities to contribute to client-focused projects while building a strong foundation in sales and trading.

Analysts will rotate across multiple business lines. During each rotation, Analysts are fully integrated into an assigned desk, with responsibilities that evolve based on business needs and market conditions. After each rotation, candidates will have the opportunity for permanent placement, enabling a tailored career path within Global Markets.

This is a development role that prepares successful candidates for long-term careers in sales, trading, and market analysis.

Key Responsibilities

  • Market Exposure:
    Participate in real-time sales and trading activities alongside senior team members. Support analysis of market trends, contribute to pricing and risk discussions, and develop a strong understanding of financial markets, trading strategies, and client objectives.
  • Client Interaction Support:
    Prepare materials for client meetings—including market updates, data analysis, and customized insights. Coordinate meeting logistics and follow-ups, contribute to proposals and pitch materials, and help deliver clear, value‑added communication to clients.
  • Desk Collaboration:
    Integrate fully into rotating desks to support day‑to‑day business needs. Responsibilities may include market data capture and visualization, spreadsheet or dashboard development, trade idea generation, portfolio or client research, and collaboration with Sales, Trading, Strategy, and Research. Shadow senior professionals to deepen product and market knowledge.
  • Development & Training:
    Participate in structured training on market products, trading concepts, analytics, and client engagement. Build technical skills (Excel, data analysis, modeling) and soft skills (communication, problem‑solving) to prepare for permanent placement opportunities after each rotation.
  • Strategic & Analytical Projects:
    Contribute to projects that improve business efficiency, enhance reporting or analytics, or support technology and process improvements. Apply quantitative skills to develop insights, solve problems, and support strategic initiatives across Global Markets.

Key Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, business, engineering, data science, or a related field.
  • Strong analytical, quantitative, and problem‑solving skills (e.g., probability, statistical inference); ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports, technical journals, and legal documents to better serve client needs.
  • Proven collaboration and teamwork skills; ability to build effective relationships and ensure alignment across internal/external stakeholders (Sales, Trading, Research, Marketing, Operations, Compliance).
  • High proficiency with Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
  • Experience with data analysis and reporting; openness to learning required systems and models.
  • Demonstrated interest in financial markets and willingness to rotate across business groups; ability to adapt quickly in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Licensing: Commitment to obtaining SIE, Series 7 and 63 within the first six months.

This is an early-career role within the Global Markets Catalyst Programs. Internship or up to ~2 years of relevant experience is welcome; the program is designed to accelerate learning and market impact.

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.

BMO Financial Group’s total compensation package will vary based on the pay type of the position and may include performance-based incentives, discretionary bonuses, as well as other perks and rewards.
