Position Summary
Working under general supervision of the veterinary technician supervisor or clinical veterinary staff, monitors the health of research rodents. Documents and communicates findings about research rodent health. Collect biological samples from animals and administer treatments under the supervision of veterinary staff. Conducts work according to departmental SOPs, IACUC policies, and the regulations of the Public Health Service. Rotational work on weekends and holidays may be required.
Job Description
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Conducts daily rounds and examines, evaluates, and documents health issues in research rodents, while working under the general supervision of the clinical veterinary staff.
- Enters case records of procedures and treatments and submits accurate service tickets for billing purposes.
- Prepares, maintains and cleans surgical suite/equipment in accordance with established policies and regulations.
- Collects samples from animals, the environment, and equipment to support investigator projects or the DCM rodent sentinel program.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and pass a pre-employment physical exam.
Special Requirements
Appropriate vaccinations and hearing protection and other PPE are required through participation in the Occupational Health & Safety Program.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent high school certification, at least two years of experience, and LAT.
- Ability to move and handle rodents.
- Proficiency with in vivo techniques including animal restraint, blood collection, and dosing familiarity with husbandry care practices.
- Working knowledge of common health problems in laboratory rodents.
- Ability to comprehend written and spoken terms used in a biomedical research environment.
- Ability to comprehend and follow SOPs and written instructions from veterinary, supervisory, and research staff.
- Conscientious attitude and concern for quality and animal welfare.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent high school certification
Six months laboratory rodent experience
Purina certification with in six months.

Salary Range
$16.67 - $24.40 / Hourly
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
