Position Summary

What will you be doing?
As a Summer Camp Program Leader, you will help children make happy memories by assisting with leading and supervising our summer camp program. Campers range from 4 – 17 years, so we will need your help to make sure that all activities are safe, fun, and appropriate. As a Summer Camp Leader, you will develop important skills and experience that will benefit you in the future, and as a bonus, you will get evenings and weekends off - all summer long! This position reports to the Camp Supervisor and typically works a full camp day from either 8:15am to 4:30pm or 8:30am to 4:45pm, but hours may vary. Camp offerings include sports, swimming, arts & crafts, visual and performing arts, science, leadership and more.

Major Job Responsibilities

What will you be responsible for?

  • Leading fun activities such as theme days, sports, arts & crafts, etc., as outlined in our daily activity plan. You may need to make changes to activities to be inclusive of all campers

  • Providing care for up to 10 campers at all times to uphold our supervision standards

  • Ensuring all program delivery upholds the principles of HIGH FIVE®

  • Supporting our extended care periods (7:30-8:30am & 4:30-5:30pm) as required

  • Understanding of our standard operating procedures, and supporting the Camp Supervisor in applying the established rules and guidelines that oversee the safety and conduct of campers

  • Reporting all accidents, incidents, concerns, or site damage to the Camp Supervisor, ensuring all appropriate forms are complete

  • Following all established departmental safety standards and practices and Employee Code of Conduct

  • Communicating with the Camp Supervisor to ensure all campers are having a fun and positive experience, and collaborating to resolve parent/guardian concerns

  • Developing a positive working relationship with colleagues and creating a camp environment that promotes respect and inclusion

  • Communicating with parents/guardians about the camper’s day at camp; sharing reminders, successes and challenges

  • Maintaining daily attendance records

  • Acting as a swim buddy in the water during camp swims

  • Keeping all camp areas clean, tidy, and safe for all participants

  • Performing all other duties as assigned

Education & Experience

What will we need from you?

  • Ability to work a minimum of 7 weeks, at 40 hours per week, in July & August, to a maximum of 44 hours. Hours vary based on program registration numbers. This position typically works a full camp day, Monday – Friday, and shifts are usually 8:15am-4:30pm or 8:30am-4:45pm, but hours may vary and may include extended care shifts

  • Attendance at all paid camp trainings, that occur during evenings and weekends throughout May and June is mandatory and a condition of employment

  • Attendance at all mandatory paid, bi-weekly staff meetings that occur outside of camp hours

What skills and experience will you bring to the team?

  • Minimum of 15 years of age and enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary educational institution for the upcoming Fall semester. Proof of enrollment may be required

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and customer service skills

  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work well independently and in a team environment

  • Standard First Aid and CPR C certification training is required

  • HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development (PHCD) required

  • Completion of a Leader in Training (LIT) program is an asset

  • Behaviour Management Systems (BMS) certification or equivalent is an asset

  • Experience working with children and/or children with exceptionalities is an asset

HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development is a requirement for this role.  Successful candidates will have the opportunity to attend this certification course as part of the Summer Camp training.
