Cleveland Clinic Cole Eye Institute Surgical Center is a state-of-the-art ophthalmic surgical facility that centralizes all preoperative testing in one location and features five advanced operating rooms equipped with leading-edge technology to support safe, efficient, and high-quality eye surgeries.
The Ambulatory Surgical Unit Assistant supports the delivery of patient care under the direction of registered nurses and the surgical team. Responsibilities include transporting patients of all ages throughout surgical and procedural areas, assisting with preoperative and postoperative patient flow, performing instrument decontamination, inspection, assembly, and sterilization, maintaining surgical equipment and supply inventory, assembling case carts, and ensuring operating rooms are sanitized and prepared in accordance with safety, infection prevention, and regulatory standards. The role also supports equipment maintenance, specimen transport, waste management, and departmental operations to promote efficient, high-quality patient care.
A caregiver in this position works full-time| days| 7:00am—3:30pm.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Supported patient care in a fast-paced ambulatory surgery environment under the direction of registered nurses.
Escorted, transported, and discharged patients of all ages throughout the surgical and procedural areas.
Assisted with preoperative preparation, including patient orientation, vital signs, point-of-care testing, and securing patient belongings.
Assisted clinical staff with patient positioning, examinations, procedures, and basic technical patient care tasks.
Performed decontamination, inspection, assembly, tracking, and sterilization of surgical instruments and equipment.
Monitored sterilization processes, maintained documentation logs, and ensured compliance with infection control standards.
Prepared and assembled case carts, stocked supplies, and maintained operating room readiness.
Sanitized operating rooms, assembled and maintained equipment, and coordinated repairs and replacement of surgical equipment.
Managed transportation of specimens, medical equipment, and regulated medical waste in accordance with safety protocols.
Maintained inventory controls, monitored medication and solution expiration dates, and supported departmental quality and safety initiatives.
Completed specialized training in surgical sterilization procedures, medical terminology, and patient care, including CPR certification.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
High school diploma or GED
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross
On-the-Job Training: After selection and placement into the position, three (3) months on-the-job training to become familiar with specific department procedures, medical terminology, equipment, sterilization procedures
One (1) year experience in a healthcare or related environment
Must successfully complete basic competencies and Level A CPR certification within the probationary period
Physical Requirements:
Light Work - Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects.
Requires a full range of body motion pulling, lifting, pushing, and transferring patients to and from various apparatus.
Personal Protective Equipment:
Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
