Target Legal Affairs reflects the passion and signature style of Target’s iconic brand. Our team of skilled legal professionals brings diverse expertise across government affairs, policy, risk management, compliance, ethics, and employee and labor relations. We partner across the business to provide cohesive, practical guidance and advocate for Target’s priorities nationwide. In the Law Department, as trusted advisors, we anticipate, investigate, and mitigate risk while ensuring compliance with laws governing our stores, distribution centers, and corporate operations. In this role, you’ll work autonomously with strong work-life balance, build relationships with senior leaders, and tackle evolving legal challenges in a fast-paced retail environment.

An Associate Paralegal role on the Charge Team provides the opportunity to support and manage employment disputes across all stages, including pre-litigation matters, administrative charges, and litigation. You will assist with matters from intake through resolution by supporting investigations, gathering and analyzing evidence, partnering with Human Resources and business leaders, and contributing to written responses and case strategy. Your internal clients include Human Resources and field and headquarters leadership, and you will work closely with internal and external counsel to assess risk, support mediation and settlement efforts, and help drive efficient, consistent outcomes.

As an Associate Paralegal on the Charge Team, you will work under the direction of the Lead ER Paralegal to support the full lifecycle of employment disputes, including administrative charges, pre-litigation matters, and active litigation. You will play a key role in intake, matter setup, and document collection, while managing systems such as LegalTracker and litigation holds. In addition, you will assist with investigations, drafting position statements and responses, coordinating with internal partners and outside counsel, and supporting mediation and litigation strategy. This role is critical to ensuring matters are handled efficiently, deadlines are met, and the team operates effectively across all stages of dispute resolution.

As an ER Paralegal Specialist (Charge Team) you will:

  • Manage intake processing for new matters by evaluating incoming dispute documents, prioritizing and categorizing matters for the team, inputting data into tracking systems, establishing organized SharePoint and Outlook file structures, and completing LegalTracker new matter forms to ensure proper matter setup.

  • Conduct preliminary investigations into dispute allegations and implement appropriate measures to preserve, secure, and produce information to ensure the company meets its discovery obligations.

  • Create and manage litigation holds by assessing custodian scope, preparing draft custodian lists, determining appropriate hold parameters, and communicating preservation obligations to relevant team members to ensure compliance with legal retention requirements.

  • Independently manage the full lifecycle of low-complexity administrative charge response activities, including intake, investigation, drafting of position statements, exhibit preparation, and timely submission to the relevant agency.

  • Coordinate and facilitate witness interview logistics, including assessing scheduling needs, managing participant communications, and proactively tracking submission deadlines to ensure timely completion of charge responses.

  • Maintain the integrity of LegalTracker records by ensuring accurate matter documentation, uploading final position statements and exhibits, and evaluating matter status for appropriate closure upon RTS or dismissal.

  • Analyze and maintain charge tracking tools to support data-driven reporting and ensure accurate, up-to-date matter status across the Charge Team.

  • Provide cross-functional support to the Field and Litigation Team and other areas of the Law Department as needed.

  • Consistently demonstrate behaviors aligned to Target's values of Inclusivity, Connection, and Drive.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Core responsibilities of this job are described within this job description. Job duties may change at any time due to business needs.

About You

  • Four-year degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • 1–2+ years of related experience within a law firm, law department, human resources, employee relations, compliance, or other relevant business function; previous experience supporting administrative charge matters or investigations preferred

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and externally

  • Analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to leverage data to influence decisions, identify risks and improvement opportunities, and distill complex issues into actionable plans

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to create transparency and confidence and influence across all levels of Target team members

  • Ability to adapt, prioritize and successfully manage multiple tasks or projects in response to ambiguous, changing or competing priorities

  • Ability to work autonomously on assigned tasks while maintaining appropriate prioritization and ensuring adherence to deadlines

  • Ability to apply discretion and sensitivity while working with confidential information

  • Proficient in Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Explorer (or similar web browsers); familiarity with LegalTracker, Exterro, and Workday a plus
