THE OPPORTUNITY

Due to an exciting pipeline of major automation projects, Dematic is seeking an experienced Project Safety Officer to join us on a 12-month fixed-term contract supporting a significant automated warehousing and distribution centre project for a global FMCG client.

Based full-time on site in Deer Park, Melbourne, you'll play a pivotal role in driving safety excellence across a complex, multi-contractor environment while supporting the delivery of leading-edge automation technology.

This is an opportunity to be highly visible on site, influence safety culture, partner with key stakeholders, and ensure every person returns home safely each day.

Reporting to the Project Safety Manager, you will lead the day-to-day implementation of WHSE initiatives, working closely with Project Managers, Site Supervisors, Engineers, subcontractors and principal contractors to ensure best-practice safety standards are embedded throughout the project lifecycle.

You'll be hands-on in the field, conducting inspections, audits, inductions and investigations while proactively identifying risks and implementing practical safety solutions that support project success.

Tasks and Qualifications:

WHAT YOU WILL BE WORKING ON

  • Provide WHSE advisory support across all project activities

  • Championing and influencing a positive, proactive safety culture on site

  • Conduct site inspections, safety observations, audits and risk assessments

  • Facilitate site inductions, toolbox talks and pre-start meetings

  • Review and support Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS), procedures and permits

  • Investigate incidents and support corrective and preventative actions

  • Assist in the implementation and ongoing improvement of the Site Safety Management Plan

  • Maintain safety reporting systems, hazard registers and risk registers.

  • Support the safe management and onboarding of subcontractors

  • Liaise with builders, principal contractors, client representatives and project stakeholders on WHSE matters

  • Participate in site safety committees and continuous improvement initiatives

SETTING YOU UP FOR SUCCESS REQUIRES

  • Degree or Diploma in Health & Safety, WHS, OHS or a related discipline

  • Minimum 5 years' experience in a site-based safety position

  • Experience working within construction, industrial, manufacturing, commercial projects, fit-out or related environments

  • Exposure to large-scale projects involving multiple contractors and concurrent work fronts

  • Demonstrated experience conducting WHSE audits, inspections and incident investigations

  • Sound knowledge of WHS legislation, risk management principles and safety management systems

  • Proven ability to influence safe behaviours and build accountability across diverse stakeholder groups

  • Strong communication, consultation and stakeholder engagement skills

  • White Card and Australian Driver's Licence
