Job Summary:

To provide specialized tracheostomy support, continuing education, teaching, training and discharge planning for patients, patient families, nurses and clinical staff. To act as an expert resource for patients, family members and other clinical and nursing staff. To coordinate patient, patient family and staff education opportunities through group demonstrations, lectures, one-on-one coaching and training. To perform job duties in accordance with the medical center's purpose.

Education & Experience

Education: Bachelors Degree in Nursing OR Associate Degree in Respiratory Care
Experience:  Two (2) years of related experience required.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:

Valid RN or RT license.  BLS

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of tracheostomy care, procedures and protocols. 

Presentation and training skills. 

Verbal and written communication skills.

Interpersonal skills. 

Knowledge and understanding of computer system, tools and programs. 

Ability to work in a team environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Designs and implements tracheostomy education and training opportunities for assigned areas of nurses, respiratory therapist and staff positions.
  • Identifies and prioritizes adult tracheostomy patients in anticipation of discharge date.
  • Assesses the tracheostomy education and training needs of patients and family members and provides teaching.
  • Acts as knowledge resource for nurses, respiratory therapist, interns, staff, patients and patient family members.
  • Develops, plans and evaluates compliance with in-services for employees in accordance with policies, procedures and practice standards in collaboration with Otolaryngology and the Office of Nursing Quality, Development and Professional Practice.
  • Regularly evaluates the training needs of assigned clinical area staff to improve competence and quality of care delivered to tracheostomy patients.
  • Collaborates with physician tracheostomy leads and hospital administration to identify needs. 
  • Serves on at least one nursing council, hospital, or medical center committee, task force, or project team to improve patient care or work area demonstrates core standards of exceptional customer service.
