Markel Personal Lines, a division of Markel focused on providing unique personal lines insurance, is searching for an Product Manager / Senior Product Manager. The Product Manager will have accountability for a portfolio of personal lines products. The Product Manager reports up to the Personal Lines Product Line Leader and has accountability for a portfolio of personal lines products.

What you'll be doing:

  • Manage P&L for the personal lines products by monitoring financials, identifying trends, developing pricing indications and taking appropriate actions
  • Periodically communicate business results throughout the Markel organization
  • Ensure products are positioned appropriately in the market from both a product and pricing perspective, providing compliance/state filings with documentation when needed to support filings
  • Continuously monitor profitability, mix of business, quality of business, concentration of risk, market feedback and proactively manage the portfolio
  • Lead the product analysts which support the personal lines products
  • Partner with underwriters to ensure all parties are working towards common goals and provide direction to make sure guidelines and authority are in line with current product/pricing structure and performance
  • Work across internal departments and external partners to ensure product changes are implemented appropriately
  • Work with legal, compliance and claims on legislative and regulatory topics
  • Take lead role in new product development and/or expansion
  • Act as product line expert, maintain a thorough knowledge of product features and benefits, and provide product expertise to various internal and external audiences.
  • Maintain extensive knowledge of competitors within the marketplace and react appropriately to changes using all available data sources to include industry data, broker contacts and publicly available competitor information.
  • Partner with external relationships where appropriate for your products

What we're looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree required – preferably in related field of study such as risk management, actuarial science, math/applied math, statistics/applied statistics, economics, finance
  • 5+ years of experience in a pricing, underwriting or product management role for a property and casualty insurer
  • Exceptional analytical and problem solving skills
  • Proven ability to understand what levers are available and drive appropriate actions to meet targeted results
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to build relationships and interact effectively across functional groups, management levels and external partnerships
  • Excellent written and oral communications
  • Effective influencing and negotiation skills
  • Ability to grasp concepts quickly and complete projects with minimal direction
  • Ability to track performance, communicate project status and ensure controls are in place for product standardization and administrative consistency
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office: Advanced – Excel, Intermediate – Word, Outlook and PowerPoint
  • Work towards obtaining industry designation (CPCU, CIC, RPLU, ASLI, etc.) or related pricing or product management curriculum preferred.

The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, licensure, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The salary range for the Product Manager position is $63,750-$106,250 with a 35% bonus potential. The salary range for the Sr. Product Manager position is $80,250-$133,750 with a 40% bonus potential.
