The Opportunity
This position works remotely to support our Electrophysiology Medical device business. In Abbott’s Electrophysiology (EP) business, we’re advancing the treatment of heart disease through breakthrough medical technologies in atrial fibrillation, allowing people to restore their health and get on with their lives.
Provides leadership on key strategic projects to enhance clinical trial technical education, operation, and excellence for next generation EP clinical technologies. With extensive field clinical experience and advanced certifications in EP, oversees clinical personnel development, training/education, and field execution efforts for Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) and Research Clinical Studies, both directly and by leading Field Clinical Specialists. Proven self-initiator and multitasker with the ability to manage multiple projects, programs, and people. Responsible for consistent technical leadership to the Field Clinical Affairs organization including clinical development, accurate technical support/troubleshooting, professional steward representing Abbott, strategic collaboration with the commercial team and provide field input of various home office groups. Individual functions as an expert resource for cross-covering difficult cases, handling, critical software testing, and high-profile presentations.
What You'll Work On
Clinical Trial Training and Education (50%)
- Leads training and education for EP Field Clinical Affairs
- Builds and delivers curricula to actualize EP clinical study protocol and product expertise
- Provides guidance and mentorship to FCS staff to develop mastery of cutting edge technologies and disease states, including new hire development
- Identifies and communicate best practices relevant to study procedure success, safety, and clinical trial execution.
- Collaborates with other field staff across the globe
- Effectively manages assigned projects such as Mentoring, Product Planning Groups, various Performance Improvement Initiatives, educational materials, etc.
- Collaborates with other Field Managers to refine best practices, ensure consistency in and performance, and communicate them throughout the organization
- Proactively examines ways to enhance success of technology launches and overall clinical trial performance.
Clinical Trial Execution/Individual (30%)
- Regularly covers EP clinical procedures and maintains advanced product certifications in EP to preserve product and procedural excellence
- Seeks opportunities to continue demonstrating and developing personal technical, research, and organizational leadership qualities.
- Active participant and significant contributor on FCS product planning council(s).
- Develops key relationships with in-house technical teams.
- Participates in corporate and product education – development and review of training materials, regional and national product launches, and Business Unit field education.
- Provides technical support and troubleshooting to customers and Abbott personnel.
- Supports original research projects which may be impactful to Abbott, where appropriate.
- Functions as a “pipeline” between Abbott and the Medical Community, constantly communicating important information to customers, within the FCS group and to other departments (product planning, engineering, marketing and education). This includes providing Product feedback, comments and suggestions and Competitive information to the Product Planning and Marketing groups.
- Supports the Education and Sales Organizations as a key speaker/trainer, developer of training materials and/or Technical Memos on new technologies and advanced algorithms (including competitive products).
- Collaborates with Sales Management and Sales Reps to develop and execute strategic plans to develop business in the territory. Assist sales partners by providing technical sales presentations in key accounts.
- Provides general corporate support as required to different departments including, but not limited to Product Planning, Marketing, Patent submissions, product literature review, assistance to legal department and strategic planning input.
- Supports all Company initiatives as identified by management and in support of Quality Management Systems (QMS), Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and other regulatory requirements.
- Complies with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, Company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments. Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.
- Performs other related duties and responsibilities, on occasion, as assigned.
FCS/Field Onboarding and Continuing Education (10%)
- Involved in candidate selection (sourcing, interviews, etc.)
- Assists in developing the training and educational plans for these individuals
- Delegates projects to FCS when proficiency in role is demonstrated
- Creates shared central resources for the field teams
- Develops several key/G100 accounts where the FCS presence can produce maximum benefits, both to the company and to the FCS’s professional development. These key accounts should be resource centers to Abbott for IDE clinical trials, employee training and Advisory Boards.
- Attends appropriate leadership training opportunities.
- Provides periodic territory updates to Global Manager
- Develops collaborative cross-portfolio team relationships that deliver measurable impact.
Audit Readiness (10%)
- Partner with Abbott Quality teams to ensure compliant study training records
- Develop and maintain Supplemental Technical Training Plans for each EP study
- Develop Audit Story Board for training programs
- Maintain records and trainings for each study audience – FCS, EnSite teams and other study personnel
- Develop a system for adding and removing personnel from EP study audiences
- Document all trainings via training logs, recorded trainings, for the FCS team, physicians, Abbott study personnel
- Develop role expectations and training matrix for each EP study role
Required qualifications
- Bachelors degree (engineering, biological sciences).
- 5+ years field experience as clinical specialist, field clinical engineer, or clinical sales supporting EP procedures
Preferred qualifications
- 2+ years experience in training/education

$72,700.00 – $145,300.00
