The position will assist with maintenance and continued development of Markel’s U.S. Compliance program, including (but not limited to) sanctions screening work and requests for sanctions-related advice, internal producer licensing, producer appointment renewals, monitoring reviews, and risk assessments.

The position reports to Manager, Compliance and is under the general oversight of Director and Counsel, Compliance for U.S. Compliance.

  • Manage the daily and weekly OFAC sanctions screening function for U.S. Compliance for several assigned internal insurance systems, including review/clearing potential hits on a frequent basis and logging the results in a tracked format.
  • Provide timely advice to business partners regarding OFAC sanctions-related referrals, including documentation of advice given in a tracked format.
  • Review and update internal sanctions guidance as appropriate.
  • Assist as directed by Director and Counsel, Compliance with monitoring reviews and risk assessments, including reviewing information provided, organizing data, scheduling meetings with risk owners, and entering/uploading related data into internal system(s) as designated for proper record-keeping.
  • Assist as directed by Manager, Compliance with internal producer licensing function, including serving as the backup for handling licensing-related matters which entails submission of license applications to state departments of insurance, documenting/uploading the licensing work performed as designated, and conducting research on producer licensing-related inquiries.
  • Assist as directed by Director and Counsel, Compliance with various U.S. Compliance tasks/projects.

Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years’ experience in a compliance-related or risk management-type role for an insurance company or financial services provider preferred.
  • Familiarity with OFAC sanctions preferred.
  • Strong computer skills, particularly with the Microsoft Office suite to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Forms, Teams, and OneNote.
  • Proven organizational skills with capacity to prioritize and handle multiple regulatory tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong attention to detail including an ability to manage compliance-related documentation and records.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills with an ability to communicate effectively to business partners.
  • Ability to work in Glen Allen, VA headquarters on a hybrid basis (3 days in office per week).

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a compliance-related role for an insurance company, insurance brokerage firm, insurance managing general agent, insurance consulting firm, or state insurance regulator
