Qantas Legal reports to the General Counsel and Group Executive for the Office of the CEO and supports all levels and business units of the organisation, from front line to the Group Management Committee, in making Qantas a market-leading, global organisation. Group Legal supports the Qantas Group through three teams: the Airline Services, Competition & Consumer, and Loyalty teams. 

Senior Legal Counsel is responsible for providing high quality, solution focused and practical legal advice across the Group on consumer law matters. You will assist with the management of all consumer law related matters including regulator interactions and contribute to discussions regarding strategic direction and risk assessment on commercial negotiations. 

This position will be required to build an understanding of internal client business needs and the operational context in which they function. You will assist to support and/or deliver effective and efficient compliance training across the Group as well as provide support and development to the Legal team. 

 
You’ll have: 

  • A current Practising Certificate in New South Wales (or other Australian jurisdiction) 

  • A minimum of 12+ years PQE, with a focus on consumer law, with a mix of Tier 1 law firm and large corporate in-house experience preferred 

  • Proven and successful experience in providing consumer law advice, managing the delivery of legal services in a fast-paced environment and familiarity with regulatory regimes 

  • Ability to provide legal advice unsupervised (within a team-oriented business environment) but also to co-ordinate with both in-house and external resources 

  • Demonstrated experience in close working relationships with management to achieve business objectives 

  • Proven experience in obtaining, understanding and interpreting legal opinions/advice 

  • The ability to understand team culture and operate in a fast-paced, collegiate environment and juggle competing demands
