Position Summary
Provides primary and/or specialty nursing and/or medical care in a variety of settings; works under physician oversight as required by state regulation. We are seeking a dedicated NP or PA to join our team in the Division of Neurorehabilitation, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, at Washington University School of Medicine.
Physiatry is a branch of medicine that aims to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to those with physical impairments and disabilities, with a focus typically on the neuromusculoskeletal system.
This position involves treating patients at both the outpatient clinic and the acute inpatient hospital as a consulting clinician. Collaboration with physicians and healthcare professionals is integral to achieving optimal patient outcomes in our rapidly growing practice. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a high degree of clinical knowledge and expertise in working with patients with physical impairments and disabilities that include chronic spasticity, intrathecal therapy, spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, cerebral palsy, orthopedic poly-trauma, joint replacements, transplants, LVADs and other medically complex neuromusculoskeletal disease processes.
As a Physiatry Clinician, you will work closely with BJC and Washington University providers, as well as the PT and OT therapy teams to optimize rehabilitative outcomes and promote patient independence.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Provides direct patient care to include obtaining patient history, performing patient assessment via observation, interview and examination; orders, performs and interprets diagnostic studies; performs preventative health assessments, screenings, immunizations and care; provides direct treatment and management of acute and chronic disease conditions; develops and implements patient-centered plan of care in collaboration with physicians, patients, consultants, nurses, ancillary care providers and others as appropriate to the patient's condition.
- May bill for services covered by collaborative practice agreement.
- Provides counseling and education of patients and their families/caregivers concerning disease management, complication prevention, disease prevention, and quality of life improvement measures, and outcome management activities.
- Monitors/ensures accuracy of patient medical records; maintains all required reports, records, statistics, etc.
- Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with established clinic/hospital standards.
- Manages health conditions via prescriptive authority or referral to other healthcare providers or community resources; may perform diagnostic or therapeutic interventions consistent with certification and state regulations.
- Champions the safety and quality of care for patients using ITB therapy and serves as an expert in the care and management of ITB pumps. Helps develop a detailed educational program for the patients and lead the quality and safety initiative for the program.
- Serves as clinical expert regarding rehabilitation nursing while demonstrating a high level of autonomy and expert skill in complex clinical nursing situations.
- Provides management services for clinical research study projects; monitors participating subjects, including medication administration and family/patient education.
- Works in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, and safety, environmental and infection control standards.
- Regularly participates in constant quality improvement and process improvement activities centered on the goal of providing exceptional, evidence-based patient care.
- Enhances professional growth and development through educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops.
- Contributes to the advancement of the rehabilitation nursing profession as a whole through research, publications, and presentations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Passion for acute inpatient healthcare.
- SNF or acute inpatient rehabilitation experience.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to understand the needs of our facility partners and patients.
- Knowledge of information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities to include symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures.
- Knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions.
- Ability to counsel patients concerning medical and psychological/psychiatric conditions, treatment plans, and behavior modification.
Required Qualifications
Nurse Practitioner
- Master of Science in Nursing with emphasis in the Nurse Practitioner program.
- Advanced Practical Nurse licensure or ability to successfully obtain licensure within three months of date of hire.
- Certain/additional certifications may be necessary based on area of specialty.
- Basic Life Support certification (Online Basic Life Support certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the Basic Life Support requirements).
Or
Physician Assistant
- Graduate of PA program.
- Current PA licensure to practice in the state of Missouri and/or Illinois depending on location or ability to obtain within three months of date of hire.
- Certain/additional certifications may be necessary based on area of specialty.
- Basic Life Support certification (Online BLS certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the BLS requirements).

Salary Range
Base pay is commensurate with experience.
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
