This senior R&D leadership role is critical to the successful delivery of Viatris’ Global Device Development (GDD) strategy, with accountability for the development of innovative, compliant, and high-performing device and combination products across a global portfolio.
Reporting directly to the Head of Global Device Development, the Senior Director will lead — Device Design & Industrialisation, comprising of experienced managers, and technical professionals across various GDD locations.
The role ensures strong technical and scientific oversight, promotes a culture of innovation and continuous improvement, and operates with a strong focus on compliance, usability, patient safety, quality, and industrial readiness throughout the product development lifecycle. This role offers a unique opportunity to lead a strategically significant vertical within a global organisation focused on developing patient-centric, technically differentiated drug delivery devices for combination products. The Senior Director will also play a key role in shaping Viatris’ future device portfolio and building appropriate internal capabilities in line with future business needs.
Key Responsibilities
Responsible for the development and industrialisation of robust drug delivery systems, ensuring they meet all safety, quality, performance, and manufacturability criteria.
Provide strategic and operational leadership across the Device Design & Industrialisation function, ensuring alignment with broader GDD and Viatris program requirements.
Define and deliver departmental objectives, resourcing, capabilities, and performance metrics aligned with cross-functional and portfolio priorities.
Drive cross-functional collaboration to ensure successful program planning and execution.
Champion the integration of emerging technologies, patient-centric design principles, and industry best practices to maintain technical differentiation and enhance usability.
Ensure compliance with applicable design controls, ISO 13485:2016, and quality system regulations throughout development.
Lead talent development, fostering a high-performance culture grounded in accountability, innovation, collaboration and engagement.
Manage functional budgets and resource allocation to support efficient milestone delivery.
Represent Viatris externally, at industry forums, and with regulatory bodies as required.
Provide technical leadership and oversight across the full product development lifecycle, ensuring delivery systems meet regulatory, safety, and functional performance standards.
Promote and embed state-of-the-art design practices including modelling, tolerance analysis, and design for manufacture (DFM) within the team.
Support external partner and supplier engagement to ensure technical alignment and timely delivery of industrialisation and scale-up activities.
Prepare and review detailed design documentation and specifications to support system development and regulatory submissions.
Actively support continuous improvement and innovation across device platforms, enhancing Viatris’ competitive advantage in combination product development.
This role requires sound judgement to navigate the trade-offs between technical design feasibility, unmet user needs, and the manufacturability and scalability of solutions, to deliver patient-centric designs that meet regulatory, functional, and commercial expectations
About Your Skills & Experience
We are seeking a candidate with a robust blend of technical, strategic, and leadership capabilities, ideally possessing the following qualifications and experience:
A degree in pharmaceutical sciences, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline; an MSc, PhD or MBA is highly desirable.
Over 15 years’ experience in the medical device or combination product sector, including a minimum of 10 years in senior leadership roles.
Demonstrated success in leading user interface strategy, device design, and execution across complex, regulated development programs.
In-depth knowledge of combination product design control processes, including integrated risk management and human factors/usability engineering from concept to launch.
Proven experience in drug delivery system development, specifically with technologies such as pen injectors, autoinjectors, prefilled syringes, vial kits, and inhaler platforms.
Sound understanding of relevant regulatory standards and guidelines, including ISO 13485, ISO 14971, ISO 11608, ISO 11040, and 21 CFR Part 820.
Strong technical expertise in mechanical design, with practical experience in device design and industrialisation for high-volume manufacturing.
Skilled in the application of physical testing methodologies and computer-aided engineering (CAE) tools such as FEA, CFD, and kinematic modelling.
Proven leadership of multi-disciplinary engineering teams, including mechanical design, moulding, and tooling experts.
Experience managing external partners for human factors engineering, design services, and analytical support.
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence, negotiate, and present complex concepts to internal and external audiences, including senior leadership.
Strong problem-solving and technical decision-making capabilities, with a demonstrated ability to guide teams through complex development challenges.
Project management experience or formal training is desirable.
