Position Summary

Sr. Principal software Engineer designs/reviews test plans and procedures, write/review automated test scripts and give strong guidance on the execution of functional, integration and system level software testing of the BIG-IP within the Seattle Test department. Participates on cross-functional design and test projects, serving as organizational spokesperson on advanced projects/programs.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead designer, responsible for the design, development and implementation of complete software test engineering methodologies and quality automation programming practices.

  • Interacts with business partners, architects, development managers, program managers and test engineers from across the company to contribute to and review test strategies, functional specifications, development designs, test cases, etc.

  • Designs, develops and maintains high-quality test architectures and ensures testability of developed designs.

  • Works closely with developers, testers, PMs and the operations team to ensure that owned product areas maintain high reliability, scalability and performance.

  • Organizational spokesperson who can create, execute against and defend test strategies and proposals.

  • Lead technical contributor who drives the company’s test engineering standards and product quality direction, designs tests for major software subsystems and oversees their development.

  • Leads cross-functional/cross-product test strategies.  Serves as organizational spokesperson on advanced test projects.

  • Serves others on technical growth.

  • Creates formal test technology proposals and drives consensus on implementation.

  • Participates in and/or helps drive certification or standardization efforts.

  • Responsible for upholding F5’s Business Code of Ethics and for promptly reporting violations of the Code or other company policies.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • 15 + years experience with the following: Network and Web technologies, Leading complex product technologies and initiatives from concept through releases, UNIX/Linux test experience (Networking, Scripting)

  • Expert level of cloud and dev ops knowledge

  • Expert-level Manual and Automation Test experience in the area of Networking.

  • Ability to assist PD Test Management and Architecture team on project scope schedule estimation.

  • Exceptional problem solving skills

  • Demonstrated project management skills

  • Strong leadership skills, and an ability to mentor other engineers

  • Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communications

  • Ability to understand the Architecture and develop the customer use case test plans and develop the network topologies

  • Able to collaborate and thrive in a fast-paced high-performance environment.

  • Strong analytic / trouble-shooting skills.

  • Extensive knowledge of product life cycle.

  • Must be a Subject Matter Expert in multiple skill areas.

  • Duties are performed in a normal office environment while sitting at a desk or computer table. 

  • Duties require the ability to utilize a computer, communicate over the telephone, and read printed material.

Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 15 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 8 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 5 years experience; or equivalent experience.

  • Excellent organizational agility and communication skills throughout the organization.
