We are seeking a Principal Process Engineer to join our Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (AME) team, supporting the Neuromodulation and Pelvic Health (NMPH) Operating Unit at our Rice Creek facility in Fridley, Minnesota. In this role, you will collaborate with a team of technical experts and manufacturing partners to develop cutting-edge manufacturing technologies and processes that drive the next generation of life-changing products for our patients.


Medtronic pioneered the field of Neuromodulation with the first commercially available spinal cord stimulation (SCS) to treat chronic pain and engineered the first deep brain stimulation (DBS) system to treat disorders such as Parkinson’s disease.  We have gone on to develop the first implantable drug pump for the delivery of medication directly to the intrathecal space of the spine, inventing the first balloon kyphoplasty devices for the treatment of vertebral compression fractures and developing RF ablation systems to treat spinal tumors.


This position requires at least 4 days onsite at our Rice Creek facility, working in a lab environment and collaborating cross-functionally with product development teams and external manufacturing partners.


Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following, working with internal manufacturing and contract manufacturing: 

  • Actively participate in all areas of new product development including the following: process design, supplier selection, sub tier supplier management & project management.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define, execute and deliver on New Product Development requirements.
  • Conduct feasibility studies, material selection, process and equipment development, tooling and test method development to enable scalable manufacturing solutions for long-term production.
  • Optimize existing processes to improve quality, production efficiency, and yield.
  • Provide feedback to Product Development teams on design concepts and specification requirements to optimize manufacturability.
  • Coach other engineers on injection molding best practices in development and troubleshooting production issues.
  • Leverage strong mechanical aptitude to support advanced manufacturing process development beyond molding (examples include coil winding, centerless grinding).
  • Provide technical and sustaining engineering support in a manufacturing area.
  • Collaborate, document, and present all learnings to project and functional teams.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
  • 25% or less domestic travel.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience or advanced degree and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience

Nice to Have: Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in injection molding process development and production troubleshooting for medical devices
  • Experience working with contract manufacturers from process development through design transfer
  • Strong background in manufacturing/operations role across multiple manufacturing technologies
  • Working knowledge and experience with FEA and CAD 
  • Strong knowledge of Design of Experiments (DOE) and familiarity with Minitab or JMP
  • Design for six sigma (DFSS) or design for reliability and manufacturability (DRM) certification

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$119,200.00 - $178,800.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
