Job Details:

Mercer University is searching for an Associate Bursar of Student Services on the Macon, Georgia campus.


 

Responsibilities:

The purpose of this position is to plan, direct, and monitor all phases of service delivery and operation of the Mercer Bursar Office. This position is responsible for the management of receivables and reconciliation of University accounts, as well as the implementation of University policies and procedures. Implements processes to maintain University compliance with Federal and State regulations as they pertain to student finance; acts as a resource for the university community with respect to student account issues including Cash Management and student tax. Provides leadership to ensure due diligence is performed on all student debts owed to the college. Responds to federal, state, and operational auditor inquiries.

Inspires and generates enthusiasm and commitment to the vision, mission, and core values of the University. Promotes employee growth and development through professional, technical, and academic programs and services. Makes effective decisions and produces results through strategic planning and development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and policies. Sets goals and priorities that maximize the use of resources available to consistently deliver results; compares work performance and outcomes against standards to achieve quality results; holds self and others accountable for achieving results and a standard of excellence.

This position works closely with the University Bursar and serves as a representative on committees and at University functions. This position is responsible for the management of two direct reports and oversight of the office, including three clerical employees and two administrative employees.

Qualifications:

A bachelor's degree and three years of experience to include: (1) Exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills and the ability to work with representatives from public and private entities and handle potentially sensitive situations; (2) Management, supervision, and extensive job-related experience in hiring, managing, directing, and motivating staff; (3) Must be analytical and detail-oriented; (4) Comprehensive knowledge of financial record keeping, procedures, and practices. Ability to interpret a wide range of written rules and regulations; (5) Effective written and oral interpersonal and communication skills, knowledge of business management principles, methods and procedures; (6) Thorough knowledge of policies, procedures, and outside regulations pertaining to Title IV and cash management. Ability to apply extensive expertise to complex problems, develop sound conclusions, and recommends new or revised policies; (7) Extensive experience in managing administrative operations and systems analysis. Candidates with an MBA in Accounting or Business Management are highly desirable.

  • Extensive job-related experience in hiring, managing, directing, and motivating staff. Strong leadership skills are a necessity for the operation of the multi-function office. Must be a team player and ‘hands-on’ manager. Ability to provide an appropriate amount of structure, direction, and feedback to ensure a high level of group performance. Defines, delegates, and directs work in a flexible manner. Recognizes that proper delegation, communication, and the setting of priorities and goals help employees feel empowered and self-motivated.

  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and email required to perform all facets of the position. Knowledge of CampusVue a definite advantage. Ability to perform management and administrative duties; analyze emergency situations accurately and take prompt action.

  • Knowledge and background in receivables management are necessary in order to meet the University’s goal to reduce receivables and increase cash flow. Ability to maintain accounting records for funds, programs involving multiple transactions; compile, verify, and reconcile financial data; prepare statistical and financial reports; research and resolve errors and discrepancies; read and interpret computer-generated reports.

  • Flexibility and an innovative attitude required in order to implement policy changes and improvements to the operation of the department. Ability to use good judgment and make difficult decisions when warranted.

  • Skill in multi-tasking and prioritizing absolute necessity.

  • Effective written and oral interpersonal and communication skills, knowledge of business management principles, methods and procedures. Ability to speak well in meetings and represent the department and University in a professional capacity.

  • Exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills and the ability to work with representatives from public and private entities and handle potentially sensitive situations.

  • Ability to handle difficult people with graciousness on a consistent basis.
