Job Description

What is the opportunity?

The Group Risk Management Real Estate team provides independent assessment of business and financial risks for individual borrowers as a 2nd Line of Defence in the Enterprise Risk Management Framework and Governance.

The Director will join the National Credit Adjudication team, working alongside real estate credit risk professionals specializing in Real Estate Owners and Operators segment of the industry.  We oversee a portfolio of large real estate clients across Canada with complex credit needs and credit exposure of over $40MM.  The position involves the support of many functions such as effective monitoring and control on all material credit risks across RBC Commercial Markets’ Real Estate Lending Portfolio, and risk assessment at a transactional level for each individual credit. Focus is on maintaining risk profile, alignment with the business, operational effectiveness, sharing best practices with business partners and working towards high level of efficiency in management of assigned portfolios, as well as enhancing client experience.

What will you do?

  • Coach to and adjudicate Real Estate credit applications within your delegated lending limits influencing portfolio quality through strategic assessment of risk, attention to data quality and knowledge-sharing while adhering to RBC’s procedures and processes
  • Deliver consistent decisions with solid communication of rationale for support, amendments or declines
  • Deliver decisions within stated turnaround times in order to assist the business exceed client expectations, achieve growth targets, and deliver on their trusted strategic advisor directives
  • Actively participate in the communication on risk and risk appetite within the adjudication team and throughout the enterprise to maintain RBC’s strong risk culture
  • Assist with the investment in RBC’s capabilities to better measure, understand and manage risk
  • Look for, and act upon, opportunities to strengthen the efficiency, accessibility and responsiveness of key risk processes and practices
  • Support the continuing development of strong credit risk skills within and between adjudication teams, as well as in the first line of defence.

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have

  • Undergrad degree in business or risk related field, Masters in Finance or Risk, MBA and/or in pursuit of CFA/FRM designation preferred
  • Deep knowledge of real estate industry and finance structures, at minimum 5 years
  • Have a strategic mindset and displays strong risk assessment/analysis skill set
  • Demonstrated strong credit risk assessment, financial analysis and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written fluency in English and French
  • Strong conflict resolution skills and critical thinking abilities to solve problems under pressure
  • Strong business and financial insight with ability to apply concept to make sound decisions and solve problems in a team environment
  • Demonstrates people leadership qualities
  • Bilingualism (English and French) required, as you will regularly do business with RBC partners and/or employees across Canada with English and French speaking needs.

Nice-to-have

  • Proactive, inquisitive self-starter with experience to define and implement own oversight framework and capable of challenging the status quo
  • Teamwork & Cooperation – Building Partnerships with Stakeholders; Adaptability; Knowledge Transfer; Relationship Building
  • Comprehensive understanding of commercial banking and lending products
  • Sound understanding of second line of defence role within risk governance and experience in Risk Management
  • Proficiency with Bank technology (Synergy, Newton etc.)
  • Proficiency in financial modelling
  • In-depth knowledge of RBC Risk Policies, procedures & practices, Folios etc
