JOB SUMMARY:

Oversees the work of the health unit coordinators (HUCs), transporters, couriers and equipment technicians during their assigned shift. Supervises the shift so that hospital operations run smoothly. Coordinates with the house supervisor as internal events arise. Serves as an important link between the frontline staff and the Manager or Director that they report to. Serves as the ambassador of the Nursing Support Services (NSS) Leadership Team and represents the NSS department.

JOB SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Supervises their assigned shift and ensures that staffing for HUCs and transporters is in place
before the shift starts. Has the authority to change staffing placement as shift needs change.
Coordinates staffing with the on-call person through Teams.
• Performs rounds on the staff while on duty to ensure that all employee needs are met.
• Monitors the Teletracking system to ensure transport jobs are being fulfilled in a timely fashion.
• Coordinates with the Equipment Technicians on duty to ensure that beds and equipment are in
the proper location. Has the authority to delegate said duties to transporters or to the rover.
• Uses the concepts of Level 5 Leadership to conduct 03’s, hold staff accountable to corrective
action planning, give feedback and coach their direct reports.
• Responsible for monthly Steps to Success and Biannuals for transporters.
• Responsible for monthly chart audits for the HUCs.
• May be required to leave the UMC Main campus for stat lab retrieval or the transport of the NICU
Team to the airport during their shift. May also delegate this responsibility to a qualified
employee.
• Responsible for the writing of 90 day and annual evaluations for their direct reports.
• Must keep up with all UMC emails and Teams messages for the smooth functioning of the NSS
Leadership Team. Must attend all Leadership Meetings.
• Must conduct weekly huddles with the transport and HUC groups in collaboration with the
Manager for the HUCs and the Manager for the transporters.
• Will be in the NSS on call rotation.
• May be called upon to assist with Safe Patient Handling patient discharges. This a task that can
be delegated to a qualified member of the team.
• Performs other related duties as required.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• High School diploma is required.
• Bachelor’s degree in management, healthcare or related field is preferred.
• Must be HUC trained.
• Must be transport trained.
• Must be basic equipment technician trained.
• Must have the ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel and Access.


REQUIRED LICENSURES/CERTIFICATIONS/REGISTRATIONS:

• Must be CPR Certified.
• Must be Safe Patient Handling Certified.
• Must have a Texas Driver’s License and the ability to be covered by UMC insurance.


SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the HUC, transporters and equipment technician positions and the ability to step
in or answer questions as needed.
• Must be an excellent communicator that can listen and guide staff through O3 meetings and
while rounding.
• Must be skilled in conflict resolution and collaborating with ancillary departments.
• Must have the ability to use cognitive thinking skills to make decisions that keep a shift moving
smoothly.
• Must have the ability to work independently.


INTERACTION WITH OTHER DEPARTMENTS AND OTHER RELATIONSHIPS:

Internal: Nursing Departments, Ancillary departments and the house supervisor External: Patients, visitors


PHYSICAL CAPABILITIES:

This role is part sedentary in the office but also part moving. The supervisor will have to push, pull and lift when helping with the transport and equipment technician lines of service. This position requires walking when rounding.


ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS:

This position is subject to inside office environmental conditions. Protection from weather conditions is present, however, temperature change inside the building may occur. This position may require car travel to local off-site clinics and the Lubbock airport; therefore, participation in certain activities will be based on presenting weather conditions.
