Job Description Summary:

Employee is responsible for providing nursing care, administering medications, and documenting care in the patient's medical record for a designated group of patients under the direction of medical provider. Under the general clinically supervision of medical provider and administrative supervision of the Practice Manager. Employee is responsible for providing nursing care on assigned shift utilizing the nursing process and age specific needs. Employee is subject to call back and overtime as required by the hospital.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1.)Performs specified patient care with a high degree of skill, minimal discomfort to the patient, and minimal supervision.

2.)Receives and transcribes the physician, FNP, PA orders as appropriate. 3.)Contributes to the development, implementation, and continuing evaluation of the patient care plan.

4.)Identifies, records, and reports any change in patient condition or adverse reaction to treatment and/or medication to the medical provider.

5.)Documents care in patient’s record.

6.)Responds to medical emergencies, initiates CPR or appropriate action, and notifies appropriate personnel.

7.)Orders patient supplies and completes referrals for patients.

8.) Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

  • Completion of a vocational school LPN program.

LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:

  • Current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse as approved by the Tennessee Board of Nursing for practice in the state of Tennessee.
  • Responsible for Continuing Education Units annually.
  • BLS certification must be obtained within the orientation period, and certification must be kept current while in this position.
  • Special certifications may be required at the department’s discretion.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Proficiency in pharmacology and documentation and the ability to demonstrate nursing skills according to current hospital and nursing policies and procedures as normally acquired through the successful completion of documentation class, pharmacology exam, and skills exam. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Skill and proficiency in the technical field of practical nursing as normally acquired through completion of a vocational school LPN program.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.

INTERPERSONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Interpersonal skills to perform nursing treatments and procedures as well as provide instruction, comfort, and support in interactions with patients and their families.
  • Communication skills needed for frequent contact with unit staff, medical staff, and other hospital departments to exchange information regarding patient care.
  • Uses proper channels of communication.
  • Contributes to a positive work environment and the overall team effort of the department.

DIRECTION/SUPERVISION REQUIREMENTS:

  • N/A

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to perform frequent moderate to heavy lifting and transporting of patients and equipment.
  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking on a continuous basis.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

  • May be exposed to communicable diseases and bio-hazardous materials.
