Plans, supervises and evaluates patient care and nursing personnel of a specific nursing unit on a 24-hour basis. In compliance with the Philosophy of the Department of Nursing, will be responsible for operations of a specific nursing unit to ensure quality care, competent and responsible personnel management and cost efficient and effective utilization of unit resources. Clinical Instructor: works in cooperation with nursing staff, physicians, and members of related health services to create a learning environment in which nursing and other staff can develop knowledge and skills toward our goal to provide optimal, achievable patient care. Serves as role model, resource person and educator. Functions within the framework of established philosophies and objectives of University Medical Center and Nursing Service. Assist Director as needed. Has a working knowledge of organizational and nursing policies.


JOB SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

o Proficient level of clinical competence in assigned clinical area
o Completion of all required education activities
• Human Resources Management- Implements recruitment strategies and
manages in-processing
of new hires. Adheres to all policies/practices of UMC. Recognizes job
performance of
personnel and provides documentation, goal setting, and feedback. Assists
the director in
facilitating employee satisfaction strategies (ex. flexible staffing and
scheduling, one on one
conversations, high middle low, reward and recognition, small groups)

o Performance Evaluations
o Retention of staff/Engagement
o O3 meetings
o Resignation/Termination/Disciplinary Issues
• Quality Management- Promotes UMC patient safety initiatives. Supports
the director and holds
staff accountable to patient care policies and procedures. Reviews unit
specific results of all
appropriate surveys and assists with actions to resolve non conformities.
In conjunction with
the director, routinely communicates action planning and participates in Lean Daily Management
to improve outcomes and prevent patient harm.

• Leadership- Assist the director in unit rounding, real time feedback and
problem resolution.
Promote staff certifications. Allow scheduling considerations for those
pursuing continuing
education. Identify high performers and provide opportunities for growth
(i.e. pathways to
leadership, conference attendance, level 5 leadership, committee
participation). Adheres to
response timelines set forth by compliance personnel.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing
• Three years of professional nursing experience
• Masters of Science degree in Nursing required
• Supervisory experience desired
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in the specific clinical area


REQUIRED LICENSURES/CERTIFICATIONS/REGISTRATIONS:

Current R.N. licensure from Texas State Board of Nursing or holds a recognized compact state licensure


SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Must maintain the same competencies as required of the staff nurses in the area(s) of responsibility. Age specific knowledge is required when needed for appropriate patient care. Current knowledge of regulatory standards appropriate for area of responsibility i.e. DNV, TDHHS, CMS, etc... Must demonstrate a working knowledge of leadership and management skills. Must be able to employ adult learning strategies in relation to educational activities. All Clinical Instructors are responsible to provide BLS. BLS instructor status is highly recommended, but may be delegated to other nursing staff in the unit. Instructor status is required in at least one of the following areas: NRP, PALS, ACLS to correlate with staff nurse requirements in each unit.
