Under general supervision of an RN preceptor, assists the RN preceptor with the provision and coordination of patient-centered care. The Nurse Extern assists the RN preceptor with activities of the nursing process and participates in patient and family teaching to achieve desired outcomes. The Nurse Extern works collaboratively with ancillary nursing and other patient team personnel in maintaining standards for professional nursing practice and professional nursing performance in the clinical setting. The Nurse Extern must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and service appropriate to the age of the patients served in their area.

Pay Range: $15.30 - $19.62/hour

Requirements: Must be a BSN (between junior and senior year) or ADN student and have completed one full year of clinical rotations, Must have completed skills labs, Current BLS for the Healthcare Provider or completed within 60 days of hire, Must be available to work off-shifts and weekends, Must be able to work 40-72 hours per pay period for 10-12 consecutive weeks during summer months, Must be able to be flexible with when scheduled to work and able to work the schedule of the assigned RN preceptor.

STANDARDS:

  • Promotes patient safety by maintaining HH standards and implementing the policies and procedures of the hospital and nursing unit, including maintaining the patient's bill of rights.

PATIENT CARE:

Demonstrates clinical competence on patient care by assisting the RN preceptor with all aspects of the nursing process, and the provision of hands on patient care.

  • Assists with assessment/diagnosis.
  • Assists with outcomes identification and development of patient's plan of care.
  • Assists with evaluation of patient's plan of care.
  • Follows hospital and unit specific guidelines and communicates or documents completed activities as required. 
  • Performs required clinical skills including but not limited to:  vital sign measurement; aseptic technique; specimen collection.
  • Performs patient care tasks related to activities of daily living such as bathing, feeding, hair, skin, and oral care.
  • Gathers data including but not limited to:  Intake; output; vital signs; patient height and weight; and point-of-care test results.

ROLE ACCOUNTABILITY:

Demonstrates professionalism and works collaboratively with the RN preceptor to determine and accept delegated duties.

Informs RN preceptor of any issues or concerns related to patient care and safety.
