The Role
MarketAxess is seeking an Engineering Manager, Database to contribute to the design, implementation, and maintenance of our database systems. The Engineering Manager, Database will partner cross-functionally within technology and business stakeholders to understand requirements and develop solutions that support MarketAxess’s data management needs. This role reports into the Global Head of Infrastructure.
How You'll Help Take Us There
- Design and implement database systems that are scalable, secure, and optimized for performance.
- Monitor and optimize database performance, identify, and resolve performance bottlenecks and other issues to ensure optimal performance.
- Manage database security, access control, and backup and recovery processes.
- Develop and implement database backup and disaster recovery strategies to ensure data integrity and minimize downtime.
- Perform database capacity planning and resource utilization analysis to ensure adequate scalability and efficient resource allocation.
- Create and implement monitoring and alerting solutions to detect and prevent issues before they impact our customers.
- Support the migration of databases from on prem to AWS cloud.
- Provide support for large scale database instances across production, non-production, and development environments.
- Perform regular upgrades and patches to address security vulnerabilities.
- Support and improve database availability and scalability.
- Serve in an on-call rotation supporting the database infrastructure and respond to production incidents.
- Proactively identify potential issues, risks, and areas for improvement in the database infrastructure and propose and implement solutions.
- Provide perspective on leading industry trends, recommendations on new and emerging technologies, and engineering process improvements.
What We’re Looking for
- 8+ years of experience in Oracle RAC, Data Guard, and RMAN (12c, 18c, 19c)
- 3+ years of experience in Golden Gate
- Experience with cloud services, databases, and datastores such as Amazon RDS, Spanner, CloudSQL, Postgresql and/or MySQL.
- Experience with cloud technologies specifically AWS.
- Strong scripting experience in multiple languages such as Python, Golang, etc.
- Proficiency in database administration, configuration, and performance tuning, with a focus on PostgreSQL.
- Solid understanding of database design principles, data modeling, and normalization.
- Experience with database backup and recovery strategies, including high availability and disaster recovery solutions.
- Experience with database architecture, design, replication, clustering, HA/DR.
- Experience with automation tools such as Terraform, Puppet, GitHub, and RunDeck.
- Experience with modern technologies and container orchestration (Kubernetes, Docker), service deployment, monitoring, and scaling.
- Demonstrated experience making pragmatic technical choices.
- Experience with Monitoring Tools like OEM cloud control.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with various stakeholders.
- Self-motivated and quick to respond to business challenges.
- Resilient, optimistic and a change agent – doesn’t accept the status quo.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

For job positions in NYC, NY, and other locations where required, the estimated salary range for a new hire into this position is $200,000 USD to $260,000 USD. Actual salary may vary depending on job-related factors, which may include knowledge, skills, experience, and location. You may also be eligible for annual cash incentives, equity, and other benefit programs.
