Position Overview 
The Department of Dance seeks a Lecturer to teach Dance 1161 Tap 1 in Autumn 26 and Autumn 27. In addition to teaching, the Lecturer prepares syllabi and course materials for assigned courses, holds office hours, grades assignments and submits grades by deadlines, and communicates regularly with students. 

Performance Objectives 

  • Planning and organizing instruction in ways which maximize student learning
  • Meeting scheduled classes and office hours in accordance with university policy
  • Ensuring curriculum implementation and course preparation in accordance with department standards
  • Preparing homework and exams, evaluating, and returning student work in a timely manner to promote learning
  • Maintaining accurate records of students’ progress and submitting final grade roster in accordance with established university deadlines
  • Maintaining confidentiality of student information in accordance with FERPA

Education and Experience Requirements

Required: Bachelor’s Degree. Classroom teaching experience required
Desired: Desired Master’s or Doctoral Degree.

As one of the premiere dance programs in the United States, the department is at the forefront of contemporary modern dance through choreographic and performance exploration, creative use of technologies and reimagining the documentation of dance traditions. Visiting artists and scholars enrich all dimensions of the program and regularly augment the resident faculty. The students benefit from institutional relationships with Dance/USA, BalletMet Columbus, Movement Research, Inc., of New York City, Ohio Dance, growing exchange programs with universities and centers in Europe, Asia, Central and South America, and Africa, and the Dance Notation Bureau Extension Center housed in the department. Through a focus on praxis, or the symbiotic relationship between theory and practice, the mission of The Ohio State University Department of Dance is to educate students through a breadth of study in contemporary dance, integrating areas of movement practice, creative investigation, and theoretical inquiry; to make significant contributions to research and creative activity in the field of dance; and to provide leadership in service to the field of dance.

The Department offers three degree programs: BFA, MFA, and PhD. All programs seek to provide the best possible preparation for dance professionals including challenging dance experiences in and out of the studio and classroom that influence and reflect the changing contemporary dance scene and its relationship(s) to culture. Course offerings occur in the following areas: contemporary and traditional dance techniques, somatic practices, performance, choreography, creative technologies for dance, dance film, dance lighting and production, dance history, theory and criticism, movement analysis, anti-racism and social justice, dance education, directing from score and Labanotation and Laban movement studies. Faculty and graduates of The Ohio State University Department of Dance demonstrate excellence in the field of dance through national and international recognition as leaders in many professional arenas.

Furthermore, the Department of Dance recognizes a responsibility to build public understanding and appreciation of dance as a creative, cultural, and educational expression. In pursuit of this goal, the department provides a minor in dance, non-major dance classes and public performances, emphasizing pluralistic manifestations of contemporary work, for both the university community and the central Ohio region.
