Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada (Hybrid)

We are looking for an Intermediate Systems Design Specialist to join our team in Burnaby, British Columbia or Toronto, Ontario.

The successful candidate will perform system design, signalling design, analysis, modelling and simulation to specify communication-based train control systems. You will develop and define system design features to meet Customer requirements. You will analyze and evaluate designs to verify compliance with system technical requirements.  You will develop and define Subsystems requirements.  You will develop block design, interlocking control tables, and application database for Software subsystems. You will analyze and evaluate system performance and prepare associated technical contract deliverable.

The incumbent is accountable for performing the design work correctly, within cost and schedule limits, as defined in approved work packages.

The work is typically defined by the Work Package Manager, then reviewed and approved by the Systems Architect and/or Manager.  The Systems Design Specialist typically works with a team of engineers to define what will be designed, how it will perform and how it will be determined that it is working correctly.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Converts Customer (internal and/or external) requirements into conceptual designs and prepares associated documentation by performing operational analyses, simulations and technical trade-off studies evaluating alternative design configurations and functional features

  • Similarly creates new concepts or modifies existing concepts to fulfil customer requirements

  • Prepares system, subsystem, and interface requirement specifications by analyzing, decomposing modelling and refining customer requirements and typical train control domain requirements

  • Prepares Operational Concept Document

  • Performs technical/engineering tasks to define system design, subsystem requirements, application databases for software subsystems

  • Analysis and simulations are performed as necessary to identify design feasibility & driving requirements

  • Prepares specialized signalling design skills, covering one or more of the following: Signalling Principles; Block design; Interlocking control tables; Safe braking model; Performance analysis and Headway simulations; Application database design

  • Prepares specialized network design skills, covering one or more of the following: Communication network requirements; Communication network design (both wired and wireless); Communication network configuration (both wired and wireless); Communication network analysis on various perspectives, such as reliability, security, scalability, maintainability etc.; Troubleshooting various complex network issues; Evaluation of existing third-party communication network design and their interaction with CBTC communication network, such as development of interface definition, RF interference, security assessment etc.

  • Prepares and supports bids and proposals, including customer requirements compliance assessment, gap analysis, architecture design, simulation, trade-off of key features, estimation, etc.

  • Presents technical design and reports to customers and/or other engineering/management groups in clear, complete, concise and non-ambiguous terms

  • Defines or proposes updates of processes and standards covering the work and its products based on the knowledge of systems engineering and/or his technical specialty

  • Operational design limits are evaluated and defined; performance analyses and simulations are developed & performed to support the above

  • Ensures the signalling design is implemented in accordance with applicable standards and signaling principles

  • Interfaces and builds strong working relationships with Software, Hardware and IVVQ groups to ensure timely analysis and resolution of in-house and field test issue

  • Leads technical discussions / technical solution presentations to internal and external stakeholders

  • Supervises contractors and other systems specialists, by defining their work, coaching them on how and what to prepare, monitoring their progress and directing them on priorities

  • Proposes work package estimates and descriptions based on the knowledge of the work and project requirements

  • Prepares and delivers regular status reports for internal and external stakeholders

  • Identifies and implements process improvement initiatives

  • Promotes a safety culture where product safety is paramount

  • Ensures that safety is built into the design by early identification and resolution of safety related defects

 Required Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Systems, Electrical, Computer), Computer Science, or a closely related field

  • Any relevant experience in development of software-based System applications

  • Knowledge of modern software engineering practices, methods and tools

  • Knowledge of systems development life cycle

  • Good marketing and presentation skills

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Experience using DOORS, Melody advance, etc.

  • Strong application (automated train control systems) domain knowledge and knowledge of systems engineering principles and practices

  • Rail Signaling knowledge

  • Work package management

  • System engineering expertise

  • Strong planning and organizational skills

  • Excellent technical writing and communication skills

  • Ability to sell/defend product to customers with differing levels of knowledge about automated systems

Salary Range: $75,000-85,000
