Job Description:

At Caterpillar’s Decatur, Il facility, we design and manufacture large mining and construction equipment. In this role as a Senior Design Engineer for Caterpillar Resource Industries in the Engine / Power Installation and Cooling (E/PIC) Systems team you will be responsible for all stages of product development including New Product Introduction and Continuous Product Improvement. These include concept, design, analysis, test, and production. The E/PIC team has responsibility for designing the systems to enable engine and power module installation into the machine, including the cooling system. Successful systems meet all machine level requirements for performance, durability, cost, weight, and manufacturing. This includes managing complex projects to meet deliverables on time and with completed staff work. Also you will utilize and further develop engineering best practices and standard work in our pursuit of Defect Free. We are a global team and you will be expected to collaborate across multiple disciplines and engage with various manufacturing teams as well.

Education and Experience Requirement:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited university and demonstrated progressive engineering experience in design, validation, or simulation

• Understanding of diesel engines, cooling systems, and/or machine integration

• Engages appropriate subject matter resources to effectively resolve technical issues
• Coaches others in promoting, defining, analyzing, and providing technical solutions

Product Design and Development:

• Design expertise in using CREO or similar

• Product development through the complete cycle including requirements management, design, analysis, test, and production implementation
• Creates new techniques to simplify the development process
• Advises on the appropriate solutions to complex product design and development problems

Analytical Thinking:

• Organizes and prioritizes the sequence of steps to be taken to remedy the situation.
• Identifies many possible causes for a problem based on prior experience and current research.
• Quantifies the costs, benefits, risks and chances for success before recommending a course of action.
• Approaches a complex problem by breaking it down into its component parts.

Effective Communications:


• Adapts documents and presentations for the intended audience.
• Demonstrates both empathy and assertiveness when communicating a need or defending a position.
• Communicates well in written and verbal formats
• Maintains focus on the topic at hand.

Managing Multiple Priorities:

• Clarifies and handles multiple concurrent and diverse activities.
• Addresses potential conflicts that impact current delivery commitments.
• Works with or leads others to re-prioritize work and reschedule commitments as necessary.
• Responds to shifting priorities while maintaining progress of regularly scheduled work.


Top Candidates will also have:

  • Engine / Power Installation & Cooling (E/PIC) specific engineering experience
  • Heavy equipment / Industrial machinery engineering experience
  • Understanding of Caterpillar New Product Introduction (NPI) process and requirements
  • Understanding of Caterpillar Continuous Product Improvement (CPI) processes
  • Experience with APQP process discipline

The primary location for this position is Decatur, IL
