DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: Cancer Registry is a department of the St. Charles Cancer Center, which is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and reporting clinical data on cancer patients. This includes reporting internally and externally to the Oregon State Cancer Registry and National Cancer Database. The data provided facilitates the assessment and improvement in the quality of cancer care for our patients. The Cancer Center possesses accreditation by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and the National Accreditation Program of Breast Centers.
POSITION OVERVIEW: The Certified Cancer Registrar Abstractor/Cancer Registry Abstractor is responsible for identifying patients diagnosed with cancer and analyzing electronic medical records, abstracting clinical, pathological, and therapeutic data in accordance with the Oregon State Cancer Registry, and American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer standards. This position provides data designed to facilitate assessment of and improvement in the quality of cancer care. This position does not directly manage other caregivers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
Maintains current knowledge of a variety of national and specialized coding rules/updates from the STORE manual,
ICD-O, AJCC, Multiple Primary Rules and SEER to analyze, interpret and abstract data correctly and efficiently.
Abstracts and codes clinical data from medical records including work-up, treatments, staging, and disease coding in compliance with regulatory programs.
Identifies of all reportable cases adhering to facility, state, and national reporting requirements. Maintains the suspense file.
Completes follow-up and documents recurrences adhering to approved standards for an accredited cancer program.
Assists supervisor with additional duties as needed such as attending meetings and completing report requests.
Assures quality of data by resolving edits/discrepancies in the abstract and responds to Oregon State Cancer Registry (OSCaR) quality inquires.
Follows the minimal use policy when accessing medical data and takes steps to protect the confidentiality of the data accessed. Maintains knowledge of Protected Health Information (PHI), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)

EDUCATION:
Required: Associate’s Degree in Health Information Management, (RHIT); or an Associate’s degree in an allied Health-related field with completion of an NCRA-accredited certificate program; or an Associate’s degree in any field with 1,950 hours worked (equal to one year full-time) in the cancer registry field.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:
Required: Oncology Data Specialist-Certified, ODS-C (formerly CTR) accredited by the National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA). Membership in National Cancer Registrars Association.

EXPERIENCE:
Required: Thorough knowledge of reportable malignant and non-malignant disease, cancer staging and treatment, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and ICD-0-3 coding.
Preferred: Two (2) years’ experience in abstracting and registry operations in a CoC accredited hospital. Use of Epic EMR and Oncolog cancer registry software.

Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.

Ability to manage facilitation and consensus building among health care professionals and agencies and achieve expected results.
