POSITION PURPOSE: 

The Pre-Anesthesia Testing (PAT) nurse provides preoperative care to patients who are preparing for surgery.  The PAT nurse focuses on the preparation for surgery with the patient/family, and the preparation for discharge to home or other extended facilities. This position works closely with the Anesthesia staff in coordinating patient care.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible to collaboratively work with the surgical providers for the patient plan of care for outpatient and inpatients.
  • Understands the importance of coordinating and collaborating with multiple disciplines to assure best practice and best patient outcome with pre-surgery/pre-anesthesia care.
  • Responsible for scheduling patient visits, pre-operative and post-operative phone calls.
  • Responsible for consistent patient and family education during pre-surgical visit.
  • Responsible for securing H&Ps, labs, and preop testing from surgeons & proceduralists offices.
  • Responsible for obtaining initial vital signs for review by the anesthesiologist, and other clinical duties as assigned.
  • Responsible for completion of documentation to avoid delays on day of surgery.
  • Responsible to assure compliance with the Joint Commission, CMS, and the other regulatory standards regarding Preoperative care of the surgical patient, including policy and procedures, monitoring of compliance, and action plan completion.
  • Willingness/qualified to assist in ASU and PACU during high acuity times.

SPECIALIZED KNOW-HOW & REQUIREMENTS

  • Registered Nursing in State of Illinois.
  • Bachelor’s Degree of Nursing required; Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Required to obtain certification through ABPANC within first year of employment if not already certified.
  • Strong background in direct patient care of ASU and/or PACU patients strongly preferred.
  • BLS required within 30 days of hire and maintained throughout employment at CGH.
  • Previous experience as a supervisor in management is preferred or strong background in project management strongly preferred.
  • Skilled in use of electronic medical record preferred.
  • Ability to write reports and proposals utilizing effective written communication preferred.
