The primary purpose of this position is to underwrite new business and renewals in a profitable manner and according to authority level and established guidelines, and drive projects having an impact on the business. Assigned larger, more important and more complex accounts. Utilize underwriting tools to determine accurate classifications, rates, and premium charges. Knowledgeable in coverage forms and policy language; appropriate utilization of forms and exclusions. Assist with resolving premium audit disputes within assigned agents/brokers. Promotes the growth and development of less experienced underwriters and fosters teamwork.

Markel Bermuda Limited, a subsidiary of Markel Group, has an opening for an Sr Underwriter, Professional Liability in the Company’s Financial Institutions (FI) / Directors & Officers (D&O) insurance underwriting team.  This role will develop new and renewal business in accordance with underwriting authority grant and underwriting guidelines. 

What you'll be doing:

• Underwrite a portfolio of D&O and FI blend coverages for Financial Institutions, and Commercial D&O coverages, for a client base of Fortune 1000 firms.
• Negotiate with brokers on program structure, premiums, retentions, contract wordings and other terms and conditions.
• Understand and analyze the financial condition of insureds, including analysis of the Balance Sheet, Income Statement and Statement of Cash Flows.
• Analyze coverage and contract language based on industry accepted policy forms.
• Take lead role in client/underwriter meetings (in-person or remotely) to quantify and assess insurance risks and exposures.
• Consider different approaches towards risks to maximize profitability (e.g. pricing, endorsements, limits).
• Maintain up-to-date familiarity with economic and legal events impacting the D&O/FI portfolio and the overall insurance industry.
• Meet outlined objectives related to quote/binder turnaround, policy issuance, renewal management, file maintenance and documentation.
• Assist in the development and implementation of new products.
• Participate on projects having an impact on the business and actively keep knowledge and skills up to date through courses and seminars where appropriate.

What we're looking for:

• Minimum of 5 years current experience in underwriting for professional liability; a recent focus in Financial Institutions Professional Liability product lines would be strongly preferred.
• Experience with industry accepted policy forms and strong working knowledge of applicable endorsement wordings.
• Four-year degree in business or related field from an accredited University/College.
• Desire and ability to enhance Markel’s position in the Bermuda professional liability marketplace through external engagement and a strong customer service focus.
• Demonstrated ability to successfully negotiate while developing positive broker relationships.
• Strong analytical and organizational skills and excellent problem solving/decision making abilities.
• Strong work ethic.  Must be a team player and able to work independently as needed.
