ABOUT THIS POSITION

Waystar is seeking a dynamic and experienced Vice President of Engineering to lead and drive the success of our application engineering teams responsible for our patient financial clearance products. This role is pivotal in managing the development and deployment of scalable, high-performance software solutions that power our healthcare products. As a key leader within the Product and Technology organization, the VP of Engineering will oversee the development of new software products, optimize current systems, and ensure alignment with our business objectives and technology strategy.

The ideal candidate has a proven track record in building and scaling engineering teams, experience in modern technology platforms, and a deep understanding of software architecture for enterprise applications. This person will work closely with cross-functional teams to deliver innovative solutions that enhance our customer experience and drive the company’s growth.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Key Responsibilities 

  • Leadership & Team Development: Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing software engineering team. Foster a collaborative and innovative culture focused on delivering high-quality, scalable products. Provide guidance on career development and performance management to engineers, technical leads, managers and directors. 

  • Software Architecture & Development: Oversee the design and development of scalable, reliable, and secure software systems. Advocate for and guide engineering teams to follow Waystar software development life cycle standards and architectural practices. 

  • Technical Strategy: Collaborate with the senior leadership team to define and execute the technical roadmap, ensuring alignment with Waystar’s strategic business objectives. Drive the adoption of modern Waystar technologies and best practices across the organization. 

  • Product Development: Work closely with product management and other stakeholders to define the product vision and ensure timely and successful delivery of new features and products.  

  • Quality Assurance & Performance: Maintain high-quality standards for software quality, ensuring robust automated testing and continuous integration practices. Maintain standards for system performance and prepare for future scalability. 

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with other departments, including data architecture, product management, and operations, to ensure seamless integration of software solutions across the platform, supporting overall business and technology objectives. 

  • Healthcare Technology Leadership: Understand the complex needs of our healthcare customers and build powerful software products that drive significantly better outcomes for them. Ensure your products are developed within industry and compliance standards.  

  • Strategy: Be part of the Product and Technology leadership team, contributing to overall strategy & roadmap. 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Strong leadership and team-building skills, with a proven track record of managing and scaling engineering teams. 

  • Deep knowledge of software development, modern web technologies, microservices architecture, and API-driven platforms. 

  • Proven experience in delivering enterprise-scale software products in an agile environment. 

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. 

  • Ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution in a fast-paced environment. 

  • Strong problem-solving skills with a focus on continuous improvement and innovation. 

  • Experience in healthcare technology or other highly regulated industries is a plus. 

 

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

Education and Relevant Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field 

  • Minimum of 7 years of software engineering experience, with an additional 5 years in a leadership role. 

  • Extensive experience with .Net software systems and scaled web platforms (e.g., Kubernetes, Docker) and modern software development practices. 

  • Proven track record of delivering complex software projects on time and within budget.
