Department Description

We have a well-established global M&BD team, which supports the firm on a wide range of business development, marketing and client relationship management activities. The team focuses on a number of key areas: including BD & Strategy covering practice and sector M&BD and client development; Operations and Systems, which includes Pitches and Pursuits, for strategic global and regional pitches; Corporate Communications, which comprises Public Relations, Brand, Design, Events, and Digital; Business Management, which focuses on the coordination of major ”Whole-Of-Firm" M&BD  priorities; and Strategic Initiatives, a team dedicated to managing and driving forward firm wide profile building and content-driven campaigns. There are also regional M&BD teams in the Americas, Continental Europe, Asia and South Africa with who this role will interact.

Role Overview

Working under direction from the LAE M&BD Senior Manager and in collaboration with the London LAE M&BD team, this role is integral in helping to drive forward our Litigation, Arbitration and Employment Practice Group strategy in London and globally to ensure we:

  • maximise our opportunities to grow our revenues from existing and prospective clients across the practice;
  • raise the firm’s profile and position within our key markets; and
  • leverage and coordinate our people, knowledge and resources in an effective and efficient manner.

This position will support the London LAE M&BD team, in conjunction with the broader M&BD team, to develop and implement the London & Global LAE M&BD plans, in line with the practice’s business plans and objectives. The role will require particularly close collaboration with other LAE M&BD senior advisers.

Key Responsibilities / Accountabilities

The role will involve ensuring a structured approach to delivering the full range of M&BD capabilities across the practice, including:

  • Practice Group special projects (e.g., website review, credentials review, directories support) – management and delivery.
  • Support the LAE M&BD Senior Manager on business development planning, including client/sector/competitor analysis, evaluation and reporting.
  • Client events/webinars/conferences/sponsorships – project management and delivery.
  • Pitches and Credentials – prepare, format and source content as required.
  • Social media and external comms – prepare, track and report engagement.
  • Respond to general internal practice enquiries.

M&BD Planning and Budgeting

  • Supporting the LAE M&BD Senior Manager, the practice group heads and other partners in the group to develop global business and M&BD plans, and budgets.
  • Delivering meaningful market analysis as required to support the planning process.
  • Supporting the execution of M&BD projects, regularly monitoring and reporting on progress.

Pitches and Credentials

  • Liaising with London LAE partners as appropriate for the collation of numerous credentials documents.
  • Participate in the pitch process, including working with the pitch team, writing proposals, credentials and ensuring best practice methodology is applied.
  • Writing and producing other bespoke materials for the practice, including client presentations.
  • Collating and maintaining information on pitches for the firm wide pitch systems (including Foundation and pitch tools); monitor success rates and make recommendations for improvements.

Client Development and Targeting

  • Ensuring that client development principles and best practice are adopted across LAE, working with other M&BD colleagues, particularly on the client development team, as required.
  • Encouraging full and effective use of the firm’s CRM database (InterAction), particularly on events.
  • Supporting the practice on client targeting initiatives and analysis.

Reputation: marketing communications and profile raising

  • Supporting the London LAE M&BD Senior Manager on the project management and reporting of global thought leadership campaigns.
  • Working with the PR team on drafting, reviewing and updating practice area entries in trade publications, directories and legal supplements.
  • Coordinating and promoting best practice integrated BD strategies across the London LAE M&BD team including e.g., InterAction, events, seminars, newsletters, white papers/thought leadership.
  • Working with the London Events team to coordinate and oversee client events/seminars.
  • Writing, editing and producing marketing communications including London LAE brochures, social medica comms, newsletter content and web copy.
  • Liaising and collaborating with other BD teams including Practice Groups, sector groups and PR to cross sell capabilities and credentials including proactively coordinating with PR to raise the profile of individual partners and propositions.

Internal Communication and Knowledge Sharing

  • Keeping the firm's systems regularly updated on case/matters information, pitches/proposals, credentials, intranet/web content.
  • Maintaining and regularly analysing key BD information systems and library of materials centrally including the pitch log, intranet, hoganlovells.com, credentials.
  • Collating information on matters advised on by the Practice, and communicating these (internally and externally) as required.
  • Liaising and working closely with London Knowledge Lawyers to leverage know-how and identify appropriate communications and BD opportunities.
  • Evaluating the analytics of marketing activities and projects undertaken and advising the LAE M&BD Senior Manager of positive feedback and where improvements can be made.

Wider M&BD projects

  • Contributing to the wider business development effort, which will include participating in specific firm wide BD initiatives and projects as required.
  • Any other tasks that may be reasonably required.

Person Specification

The Candidate

Essential

  • 3-4 years previous experience in working in a business development/marketing environment, preferably in a major law firm.
  • Solid understanding of professional services marketing and business development.

Desired

  • Prior knowledge and experience of litigation and arbitration would be advantageous.

Qualifications & Training

  • Relevant marketing or sales qualification, such as the CIM or equivalent.
