    The Regional Office Asia tax function oversees tax operations our Asia subsidiaries and joint ventures in Hong Kong, Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, Bermuda, Malaysia, India, and China, covering all taxes including, Corporate Income Tax, Value added Tax, Withholding Tax, Transfer Pricing, Global Tax Reporting Regimes (FATCA, CRS), Global and Domestic Minium Tax Regimes.

    In Hong Kong, Sun Life operates through a regional branch as well as several subsidiaries and joint ventures, including licensed insurers, licensed asset management entities, as well as other unlicensed service providers.

    Reporting to the Head of Tax, Asia and local CFO, the Director, Tax , Hong Kong supports this objective through leading our tax operations in Hong Kong with respect to tax compliance, tax reporting, and tax advisory.  The Director, Tax, Hong Kong will also support the broader Regional Tax team and be tasked with leading our growing tax operations in Bermuda and Singapore.

Preferred skills

  • Comprehensive knowledge of Hong Kong taxation
  • Strong knowledge of tax principles with respect to Corporate Income Tax, Value Added Tax, Withholding Tax, Transfer Pricing, International Tax and an awareness and understanding of global tax reporting regimes (FATCA, CRS, CbCR)
  • Familiar with Global Minimum Tax and Domestic Minimum Tax regimes and willing to develop further expertise in this area
  • Strong inter-personal skills and the ability to develop strong working relationships with multiple stakeholders within Sun Life’s Corporate Office, Regional Office, and Local Business Units, as well as with tax authorities and outside advisors
  • Strong communication skills and able to provide clear written and verbal communication to various levels of management
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, organized, and capable of working under pressure.
  • Is an excellent team player while also being able to lead and manage a team 

Qualifications

  • A university degree specializing in accountancy or law
  • Relevant professional qualifications in accountancy or law
  • 15+ years of relevant tax experience gained in professional firms (Big 4 accountancy firm or law firm) or multinational financial institution

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Tax leader with overall accountability for all of Sun Life’s HK based entities, as well as our associated Singapore and Bermuda businesses with the support of a small team.
  • Responsible for tax reporting including, tax provisioning process, reconciliations, effective tax rates, current and deferred tax accounts, and maintaining tax attributes. 
  • Responsible for tax risk management/compliance, including local tax, Global Minimum Tax and Domestic Minimum Tax, maintaining Transfer Pricing documentation, FATCA/CRS, and any other tax related compliance obligations. 
  • Responsible for tax advisory support and serving as a strategic partner to the business to identify, recommend, and implement tax effective solutions. 
  • Support FP&A and strategic/business planning for taxes.
  • Manage enquiries, tax audits, and litigation with tax authorities
  • Monitor and interpret changes to tax legislation and communicating tax considerations and operational/business impacts.
  • Work with our Corporate and Regional Tax team to develop and define effective controls for all aspects of tax operations
  • Manage and mentor members of the tax team to greater levels of effectiveness and engagement
  • Manage and work with external tax advisors throughout the tax life cycle to effectively manage tax risks
