About Generate:Biomedicines

Generate:Biomedicines is a new kind of therapeutics company – existing at the intersection of machine learning, biological engineering, and medicine – pioneering Generative Biology™ to create breakthrough medicines where novel therapeutics are computationally generated, instead of being discovered. The Company has built a machine learning-powered biomedicines platform with the potential to generate new drugs across a wide range of biologic modalities. This platform represents a potentially fundamental shift in what is possible in the field of biotherapeutic development.

We pursue this audacious vision because we believe in the unique and revolutionary power of generative biology to radically transform the lives of billions, with an outsized opportunity for patients in need. We are seeking collaborative, relentless problem solvers that share our passion for impact to join us!

Generate:Biomedicines was founded in 2018 by Flagship Pioneering and has received nearly $700 million in funding, providing the resources to rapidly scale the organization. The Company has offices in Somerville and Andover, Massachusetts with over 300 employees.

The Role:

Generate Biomedicines is looking for a highly experienced and motivated Principal Scientist to join the multidisciplinary Protein Analytics & Biophysics team. The candidate will lead efforts in evaluating protein-protein binding interactions using a repertoire of biochemical and biophysical technologies such as Biacore, Carterra, Octet, KinExA and Gyrolab to better enable Generate Biomedicines’ machine learning-powered platform and rapidly advance biotherapeutics through the pipeline. The position will focus on target validation, screening, assay optimization, rigorous kinetic analysis and solution equilibrium measurements. The successful candidate will apply fundamental biomolecular interaction analysis principles and develop novel methodologies to support data-driven, high-throughput and modality-agnostic workflows. The individual will have the opportunity to train and mentor a talented team of scientists and serve as a subject matter expert within project teams in pushing the boundaries of generative biology.

Here's how you will contribute:

  • Drive design and execution of fit-for-purpose binding assays and workflows using techniques such as surface plasmon resonance (SPR), bio-layer interferometry (BLI) and kinetic exclusions assay (KinExA) in alignment with program goals and with broader organizational objectives
  • Demonstrate a proven track record of efficiently collate, analyze, visualize, interpret and communicate complex data sets using a repertoire of digital tools
  • Pioneer efforts to maximize productivity, streamline processes and expand our machine learning capabilities by integrating new and innovative technologies
  • Collaborate with computational scientists and multidisciplinary project teams to support critical decision-making checkpoints throughout discovery process
  • Provide technical oversight and strategic guidance to functional team members

The Ideal Candidate will have:

  • PhD in a scientific field of study and 8+ years of relevant experience, Master’s degree in a scientific field of study and 14 years of related experience, or B.S. in a science-related discipline with 16+ years. Industry experience is required
  • Deep expertise and extensive hands-on experience in biomolecular interaction analysis using biosensor-based platforms (Carterra LSA, Biacore, Octet) and solution-based approaches (KinExA, Gyrolab) is required
  • Highly skilled in experiment design with a strong ability to analyze, interpret and communicate complex kinetic and mechanistic data is required
  • Proficient in integrating experimental data into Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) to ensure accurate and efficient data management and accessibility is preferred
  • Knowledge of traditional protein characterization and developability techniques (SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, SEC, SEC-MALS, MS, DSF, DSC) is preferred
  • Experience in preparing nonclinical documentation for intellectual property applications and regulatory filings is a plus
  • Experience with liquid handling robotics and laboratory automation is a plus
  • Programming experience with Python and/or R (R Studio) is a plus
