Join BMO as a Senior Manager, Risk Strategic Initiatives and Risk Oversight. You will play a critical role in providing independent oversight and effective challenge of risk management activities across BMO’s largest operating group. This is a unique opportunity to drive strategic initiatives within a dynamic risk function while leveraging data analytics to support informed decision-making and enhance risk management capabilities.

What You’ll Do:

- Lead strategic risk initiatives by identifying key risk areas, conducting deep-dive reviews, and delivering actionable recommendations to enhance risk management processes.

- Utilize your data analytics expertise to analyze complex data sets, generate insights, and drive strategic decision-making. You’ll translate data into meaningful reports and presentations for senior management.

- Partner with business stakeholders across Canada and the U.S. to challenge assumptions, validate risk assessments, and ensure a strong second line of defense.

- Act as a consultant and advisor to the business, delivering insights that go beyond traditional risk management and helping the organization evolve its risk practices.

- Contribute to the risk management function by assessing risks, providing recommendations, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

What You Bring:

- Proven ability to lead and execute strategic initiatives and provide advisory services to business units.

- A strategic mindset with a passion for using data to drive decision-making.

- Strong experience in risk management, ideally within a financial services or consulting environment.

- Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to engage confidently with senior leaders.

- A proactive, self-starter attitude with a demonstrated history of ownership and accountability for delivering initiatives.

- Proficiency in data analysis and visualization tools, such as Excel and Power BI, with a solid understanding of how to extract insights from data.

- Flexibility and adaptability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Minimum 10 years of experience, particularly with a background in risk management, and an advisory mindset with experience in data analytics.

- Experience in the financial sector, especially banking, would be a strong advantage.

- Exposure to retail banking, personal and business banking, or other related financial operating groups.

- Consulting experience is highly valued

- A degree in business, data analytics, risk management, or related fields. Advanced degrees such as an MBA are a plus.

This is an individual contributor role. This position is located in Toronto and offers a hybrid work model with 2-3 days in the office

Supports the P&BB Strategic Initiatives Director and P&BB ORO team in executing strategic priorities for the group. Gathers and integrates data and information to promote the effective and profitable operation of the business/group and enhances the Bank’s profile in the marketplace. Works with stakeholders to interpret financial and business results, understands the operating environment & emerging trends and provides planning, support and recommendations to improve operational effectiveness and tracks achievement of objectives. Supports the effective management of risk, including operational and compliance risk and management of the attestation/reporting process specific to the business. Provides strategic counsel on community/industry events and directs and coordinates the logistics of these events. Supports the development of effective, consistent communications for the business/group senior leader and for the leadership team.

  • Provides strategic input into business decisions as a trusted advisor.

  • Influences and negotiates to achieve business objectives.

  • Recommends and implements solutions based on analysis of issues and implications for the business.

  • Assists in the development of strategic plans.

  • Identifies emerging issues and trends to inform decision-making.

  • Makes recommendations to management and senior leaders on strategy and new initiatives, based on an in-depth understanding of the business/group.

  • Acts as a subject matter expert on relevant regulations and policies.

  • May network with industry contacts to gain competitive insights and best practices.

  • Supports the execution of strategic initiatives in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Recommends business priorities, advises on resource requirements, and develops roadmap for strategic execution.

  • Manages resources and leads the execution of strategic initiatives to deliver on business and financial goals.

  • Acts as the prime subject matter expert for internal/external stakeholders.

  • Defines business requirements for analytics & reporting to ensure data insights inform business decision making.

  • Monitors and tracks performance and addresses any issues.

  • Leads the execution of designated business programs; assesses and adapts as needed to ensure quality of execution.

  • Develops and manages comprehensive information management systems; designs and/or leads initiatives to improve processes, analysis, and reporting.

  • Employs systems (e.g. customized exception reports, tracking reports etc.) to manage information.

  • Integrates information from multiple sources to enable more efficient processes, enhanced analysis and/or streamlined reporting.

  • Plans and controls unit operating expenses in accordance with forecasts.

  • Supports development and execution of strategic initiatives in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Breaks down strategic problems, and analyses data and information to provide insights and recommendations.

  • Conducts independent review, analysis, and resolution of strategic issues.

  • Monitors and tracks performance and addresses any issues.

  • Designs and produces regular and ad-hoc reports, and dashboards.

  • Builds effective relationships with internal/external stakeholders.

  • Ensures alignment between stakeholders.

  • Applies expertise and thinks creatively to address unique or ambiguous situations and to find solutions to problems that can be complex and non-routine.

  • Implements changes in response to shifting trends.

  • Broader work or accountabilities may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Typically, 7+ years of relevant experience and post-secondary degree in related field of study or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Seasoned professional with a combination of education, experience, and industry knowledge.

  • Verbal & written communication skills - In-depth / Expert.

  • Analytical and problem-solving skills - In-depth / Expert in data acquisition, analysis and insight development using tools such as Excel and Power BI.

  • Influence skills - In-depth / Expert.

  • Collaboration & team skills; with a focus on cross-group collaboration - In-depth / Expert.

  • Able to manage ambiguity.

  • Data driven decision making - In-depth / Expert

Salary:

$92,400.00 - $171,600.00

The above represents BMO Financial Group’s pay range and type.

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
