This role sits within the CBA Retail Banking Services (RBS) Strategy function, which is accountable for defining the strategic roadmap, creating partnerships to broaden the bank’s ecosystem, and driving sustainability for the Retail Bank.
The strategy team oversees the ongoing development of the RBS’ strategy by advising and facilitating RBS leadership team discussions, preparing materials for the CBA Executive Leadership Team and the Board, and by collaborating on projects with leaders across the Retail Bank and the Group.
The team is responsible for driving the Environmental & Social (E&S) strategy within RBS. As the largest retail bank in the country, we have a responsibility to meet the current needs of our customers and the community while operating sustainably for future generations.
This role will support RBS contribution to the groupwide social impact program, supporting the business to embed key social impact initiatives and adhering to the requirements set out in the Environment and Social Policy.
You will work to identify current and emerging social risks and manage risk exposure, including in relation to the areas of modern slavery and Indigenous affairs.
The team advise and support on the development of discrete programs of work; and support the business to make transparent disclosures on non-financial progress and performance.

In this role, you will be responsible for working across RBS to drive inclusive and accessible banking for Indigenous customers, including those in remote locations and those experiencing vulnerability. You will also support the business to further our commitments to respecting human rights, first nations strategy and social and affordable housing.
The role will work closely with Indigenous Affairs stakeholders and Customer Advocacy teams to ensure we are meeting the needs and expectations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander retail customers and meeting our obligations outlined in the Code of Banking Practice.
Success in this role will be enabled by partnering with the business to deliver Reconciliation Action Plan outcomes across RBS, with particular focus on meeting employment and cultural capability commitments.
In conjunction with the broader Group Social Impact team, you will provide advice and “should we” guidance to the business to support adherence to our human rights policy commitments and maintaining oversight of domestic and regulatory requirements relating to the social settings within the E&S Policy.
On any given day, you will:
Support the analysis, communication and delivery of environment, social and governance related reporting requirements.
Develop the forward-looking plan/strategy to inform the roadmap of social initiatives for RBS.
Take ownership of work streams/ projects end to end, and independently managing deliverables.
Work closely with other strategy, business development, product, and delivery teams across Group and RBS to ensure there is alignment to the E&S strategy & policies, keeping abreast of their strategic agenda and interdependencies.
Identify roadblocks or dependencies, which could impact specific work stream / projects and resolve/ escalate to your manager as required.
Engage with third party organisations and industry bodies on social impact strategies.
Analyse information and presenting it clearly and concisely for stakeholders to understand and make informed decisions.
Contribute to formal papers for both the CBA Board and Leadership Teams, including regular E&S strategy progress reporting.
Ensure compliance with the Part 4 of the Code of Banking Practice
Work with product teams to design banking products that are ‘fit for purpose’ to support Indigenous customers financial development and financial wellbeing
Provide financially excluded and vulnerable customers with increased access to appropriate products and services by utilising the most relevant channels, including communication and stakeholder channels
Work closely with Government and Regulatory Affairs to complete relevant regulatory reporting
To be successful in this role, you will have:
First nations, Human Rights or Social Impact experience, focus, or expertise.
Strategy experience, consulting experience, or experience in Retail Banking/Financial Services firm, with a strong skillset in product/innovation strategy.
Excellent strategic thinking skills, including a structured approach to problem solving that can be well articulated.
A can-do attitude and flexibility to handle multiple competing tasks/priorities.
Ability to engage, build strong relationships and rapport with a variety of stakeholders including senior leaders (CBA staff, Indigenous leaders, etc.) and manage a wide diversity of personal styles
An ability to manage priorities and work independently while managing a variety of stakeholders, both upwards and downward.
The ability to influence stakeholders and independently resolve roadblocks to reach a common goal.
Strong sense of self-awareness, the ability to show empathy and be diplomatic
Insight – ability to read situations and exercise good judgment
An excellent customer focus
Demonstrated ability to work autonomously as well as a team member
