Demonstrates proficiency in administering the fundamentals of the nursing process in hemodialysis, contributes to the nursing assessment and the development of the nursing care plan, and participates in the evaluation of nursing care within an assigned unit, department, or specialty area. Shares responsibility with other health care disciplines. Reports to Department of Nursing Director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs dialysis treatments in accordance with approved facility policies and procedures.
  • Prior to initiation of dialysis, ensures dialysis machine, alarms, and all products used during treatment are prepped and meet quality standards.
  • Performs all procedures of dialysis and related patient care  including monitoring for adverse reactions and complications.
  • Communicates with physician and other members of the patient care team to assure that patient care plans remain up to date and necessary changes to plan of care are updated.
  • Educates patient and family regarding dialysis treatment, kidney disease management, nutrition, and exercise regimens.
  • Provides necessary education to any team member regarding dialysis treatment and assists them in competencies.  
  • Assists in the maintenance of a safe and clean working environment.
  • Ensures optimal patient care utilizing the nursing process.
  • Maintains patient records and documents to ensure accurate record of patient’s medical and nursing care.
  • Administers medications and IV therapies in accordance with the Registered Nurse, Nurse Practice Act.
  • Assesses and plans patient/family education and discharge needs.
  • Recognizes and responds to emergency situations appropriately.
  • Accountable for problem solving to include initiating, delegating, and evaluating patient care team functions.
  • Promotes an environment conducive to professional practice by functioning as a role model and resource person for other patient services team members.
  • Practices competencies in nursing skills based upon current scientific knowledge.
