Position Summary
Ivy Tech Community College - Richmond is seeking a student-centered Academic Advisor in the Schools of Business, Logistics, and Supply Chain, and Public Affairs and Social Services to provide holistic, developmental advising to continuing students. This role supports student persistence, retention, and completion through academic planning, registration support, proactive outreach, and referrals to campus resources. The advisor serves students through scheduled and drop-in appointments, collaborates across departments to ensure accurate guidance, and uses data, documentation, and communication strategies to promote student success.
Key Responsibilities
Academic Advising and Student Planning
- Provide comprehensive academic advising to continuing students across multiple programs and pathways.
- Help students develop, update, and monitor academic plans aligned with educational, transfer, and career goals.
- Assist students with course selection, degree requirements, program options, prerequisites, and graduation planning.
- Interpret placement information, curriculum requirements, institutional policies, and academic procedures.
- Educate students about registration processes, deadlines, academic standing expectations, and related institutional requirements.
- Support students in clarifying goals and making informed academic decisions.
Student Success, Outreach, and Retention
- Manage an assigned student caseload using proactive outreach and timely intervention strategies that support persistence and completion.
- Monitor student progress through regular communication, documented advising interactions, and data-informed follow-up.
- Conduct outreach to students experiencing academic difficulty or other barriers to success.
- Participate in student success initiatives such as orientation, onboarding, retention campaigns, and commencement-related support.
- Contribute to a structured communication plan that engages students throughout the academic lifecycle.
Collaboration, Referral, and Student Support
- Build strong working relationships with faculty, staff, and campus partners to ensure consistent advising information and coordinated student support.
- Refer students to appropriate campus and community resources, including financial aid, tutoring, accessibility services, career services, and other wraparound supports.
- Foster an inclusive, welcoming, and student-centered environment in which all students feel respected, supported, and empowered.
Records, Systems, and Compliance
- Maintain accurate advising records and student documentation in compliance with FERPA and institutional standards.
- Use student information systems, CRM tools, and related technologies to support case management, communication, and service delivery.
- Analyze advising and enrollment-related data to identify trends, support continuous improvement, and inform student success strategies.
- Maintain current knowledge of institutional programs, curriculum changes, academic policies, and advising processes.
Institutional Engagement
- Participate in committees, cross-functional teams, and professional development opportunities as assigned.
- Support institutional initiatives that promote collaboration, accountability, and high-quality student service.
- Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement and evidence-based advising practice
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required, or an associate degree with an approved plan toward bachelor’s degree completion.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in academic advising, student services, enrollment management, or a related student-support role.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trust and rapport with diverse student populations.
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and experience using virtual meeting platforms, CRM systems, student information systems, or related technologies.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, student-facing environment.
