What you’ll do
Purchasing Assistant plays a vital role in provides clerical and administrative office work such as data processing, document processing, as well as record and file maintenance, supporting the purchasing/procurement department.
Perform all functions directly related to physical commodities-purchasing, logistics, and account management for our direct-ship-to-farm business and support the sales team to buy and coordinate direct-to-farm buying and shipping of agri commodities.
Collaborate and communicate with sales staff to ensure accuracy and deadlines are met, proactively cultivate and maintain professional relationships with various internal departments
Determine requirements and purchase of bulk commodities from line companies, grain producers, and brokers, maintain/manage vendor contracts and negotiation of new purchase agreements for commodities.
Establish strategic relationships with key vendors, continuously review and analyze market trends and supply conditions.
Complete monthly volume purchase and dollar purchase reports, forecasts commodity usages in conjunction with Operations, Sales, Nutrition & Formulation departments.
Ensure daily purchase and sale documentation is accurate and timely.
Negotiate purchases and sales of agricultural commodities and co-products, maintaining close working relationships with suppliers, transportation companies, customers and manufacturing facilities.
Participate in industry tradeshows, associations, conferences and other business development events.
Actively contribute, in a true team environment, to achieving the overall business goals and keep management and sales staff current on product development opportunities and techniques and collaborate and provide input into additional value-added potential product and service offerings.
Who we’re looking for
Bachelor in Business Administration (Procurement / Operations Management, Agriculture or Operations Engineering), or related training and experience;
Specialization in procurement will be considered an asset;
3 to 5 years’ experience in procurement management in the agri-commodity markets preferred;
Knowledge of procurement management using an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system;
Experience in the agricultural community is preferred.
You’ll also need
1–3 years of experience in feed and grain environment
Understanding of logistics (rail, truck, and container);
Background in grain buying and agri business preferred
Class 5 driver’s license is an asset
Strong sense of accountability, responsibility and collaboration;
Excellent communication, negotiation skills, and numerical ability;
Good organization skills, interpersonal and customer service skills;
A demonstrated willingness and drive to improve and grow the business with a keen sense of profit accountability;
