Your roles and responsibilities 

We have an exciting opportunity for a Focused Anaesthesia Nurse to join our Anaesthesia team, working under the direction of a Veterinary Anaesthesia Specialist or Resident. 

The Anaesthesia Nurse will be involved in all stages of the anaesthesia process from the perioperative planning through to the recovery period. Our anaesthesia nurses are responsible for the sedation of patients under direction of a veterinary surgeon to facilitate a wide variety of procedures. They are also directly involved in pain assessment and in the provision of analgesia with help from a supervising senior anaesthetist or resident.

The role requires rotation in and out of theatre (MRI, CT, X-rays, US), providing the opportunity to build on your experience and skills with a variety of different cases and techniques in a supportive environment. The role will also involve helping to set up anaesthetic equipment and looking after the stock levels of anaesthetic consumables in MRI, CT and X-ray. 

This position is full-time, working a 40-hour week. Our anaesthesia nurses are also required to participate in the on-call rota alongside our senior anaesthetists and residents. This comprises of 1:5 weekends and approximately 1:14 weeknights on-call. Some additional cover of Bank Holidays will also be required.   

  • Working within the anaesthesia team under the direction of a veterinary anaesthesia specialist or resident. 

  • Anaesthetise patients across different disciplines by rotating as allocated between theatre and out of theatre departments.  

  • Calculation, administration and monitoring of sedations under direction of a veterinary anaesthetist.  

  • Assisting with the out of hours provision by participating in the on-call rota. 

  • Carry out pre-anaesthesia patient assessments prior to general anaesthesia or sedation and report findings to Veterinary Surgeon so that a treatment plan can be made.  

  • Set up anaesthetic equipment and monitoring of stock levels and consumables in MRI, CT and X-ray. 

  • Accurate completion of patient records and clear communication of patient treatment plans when liaising with the ward nurses for patient recoveries. 

  • Work and communicate effectively with associates across all roles 

  • Display correct professional behaviours and advocate patient welfare. 

  • Maintain RVCS registration and comply to CPD requirements 

  • When confident within the role, to provide support and guidance to other RVNs and SVNs in relation to anaesthesia.  

  • Undertake other duties as required within the remit of an RVN and assisting in other departments outside of anaesthesia as needed.   

  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures at all times to include but not limited to; clinical tasks, infection control and health and safety policies.  

 

Successful Candidate:  

To be successful in this role you need to be highly organised, with great attention to detail, able to use initiative and the ability to cope with a fast-paced working environment. You should be a highly motivated team player with excellent communication skills and have the passion and drive for delivering outstanding client and patient care.  

Although prior experience of anaesthesia at referral level would be desirable, we will also consider applicants with experience from general practice with a keen desire to lean and a passion for anaesthesia.
