Position Description

We have the unique opportunity for a VP/Director, Commodities Trading to join our Energy group in North America. The broad mandate to grow market share in Commodities will require the candidate to utilize knowledge of physical and financial energy markets to price, execute and manage natural gas and/or crude oil derivatives for BMO’s corporate and investor client base. This role includes direct responsibility for executing trades, actively managing linear and non-linear risk, and running/maintaining fundamental models. The candidate also identifies opportunities for increased efficiency and improved service to internal and external clients and implements positive change within the business unit.

Group Overview

The Commodities Trading group is a team within Global Markets’ Global Origination team responsible for managing and executing hedging and financing transactions for BMO’s investor, corporate and commercial clients. Working closely with the Global Client Coverage (GCC) group as well as investment, corporate and commercial banking, the team serves as product experts with a coverage universe including fixed price swaps, basis, options, and exotic derivatives.

Key Areas of Accountability 

Skills:

  • Minimum 5 years experience at a bank, trade shop, market-maker or hedge fund managing an active book of Energy Derivatives
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) including listening, understanding, and responding
  • Expertise in financial computer applications including MS Excel, VBA, and Bloomberg.  Strong proficiency in other Microsoft Office products.
  • Able to exercise independent thought and judgment under limited supervision and to adapt to new tasks with little notice
  • Creative, insightful and eager to learn

Knowledge:

  • Demonstrates strong knowledge of Energy markets – financial and physical
  • Thorough knowledge of derivatives including options
  • Knowledge of banking and risk concepts as well as derivative regulations
  • Current on existing and emerging Energy Industry trends in Canada and the U.S.
  • Relevant experience and passion for working in a market making, direct client-facing role

Transaction Modelling & Financial Analysis:

  • Use abilities in financial analysis to communicate effectively and succinctly with GCC and clients to facilitate deals
  • Develop marketing ideas and help initiate transactions through appropriate presentation of financial data
  • Understand all software systems for trading and pricing transactions
  • Develop, maintain, and build out fundamental models

Collaboration:

  • Be a strong partner and collaborator with the Commodities Team to share market information and solve problems
  • Build relationships with product partners across Global Markets to provide/solicit cross-product mandates for new opportunities
  • Continuously coaching and mentor Analysts and Associates
  • Ensure high levels of client satisfaction through strong cross-department coordination with the following groups:
    • I&CB and P&C Coverage and Portfolio Management
    • Other Global Markets Groups
    • Cross-Business Risk and Cross-Business Structuring
    • Documentation & Legal
    • Market Risk
    • Client Onboarding
    • Compliance

Compensation and Benefits:

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.

BMO Financial Group’s total compensation package will vary based on the pay type of the position and may include performance-based incentives, discretionary bonuses, as well as other perks and rewards.
