Job Summary
The Manager of Indirect Tax supports the Director of Tax Accounting and plans and manages the sales/use, property, and other similar tax compliance, audits, systems, payments, and related accounting for the corporate and plant/facilities. The scope of the responsibilities includes gross receipts, excise, property, and sales/use taxes. The overall objective of this position is to support the business by maintaining compliance with all applicable laws while minimizing the tax burden to the Company.
Job Responsibilities
- Prepare, file, and make payments for all gross receipts and LLC annual filings including the quarterly OH Commercial Activity Tax, the OR Commercial Activity Tax, the NV gross receipt returns, and the Washington B&O returns.
- Manage the sales and use tax compliance process including reviewing all prepared sales and use tax returns, filing and payment of monthly returns, payment of taxes utilizing the state websites and preparing the monthly journal entry for all sales and use tax returns.
- Develop a centralization process for payment of personal and real property tax bills, partnering with 3rd party service provider to identify opportunities for property tax abatements and file accordingly
- Manage and coordinate the property tax compliance and payment process including managing the personal property tax rendition process, gathering required data for 3rd party service provider to prepare personal property tax renditions and review renditions for accuracy before filing.
- Partner with 3rd party service provider to identify opportunities to appeal real property values and coordinate such appeals with 3rd party service provider.
- Manage all governmental audits for property and sales and use tax and coordinate for assistance with 3rd party service providers and local complex managers as needed
- Assist Director and oversee the consolidation and centralization of certain indirect tax functions from multiple locations.
- Assist with the implementation of automation and centralization of the sales and use tax compliance processes for multiple companies with a 3rd party service provider, conducting reverse audits for refund opportunities where applicable.
- Advise business units regarding sales/use tax requirements and issues increasing awareness of the transaction tax consequences of their actions and provide recommendations and alternatives resulting in tax minimization
- Research issues and prepare documentation as needed to respond to specific issues or advise on particular initiatives or projects.
- Ensure all tax return files and supporting documentation are accessible, understandable, provide an adequate audit trail and support the return positions taken on each return.
- Address all tax notices on a timely basis to ensure the Company remains in good standing with government agencies while also minimizing interest and penalties.
- Special projects and other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong Excel, System and Tax Research Skills required; experience with Adage, Oracle, OnBase, or M3 a plus
- Experience with ERP implementations or integration a plus
- Effective project management skills needed
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing with all levels of the organization and vendors including the ability to communicate complex tax concepts in simplified terms
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment using excellent organizational skills and precise attention to detail.
- Must possess a strong customer-centric attitude, high energy level and a strong sense of urgency
- Ability to effectively manage projects including organizing and prioritizing work in a dynamic and complex environment with the ability to adapt to changing priorities while maintaining a productive and committed work effort, meeting deadlines and managing workload.
Education
The position requires a bachelor’s degree in business, Accounting, Management or Finance; CPA or CMI is strongly preferred.
Experience
The position requires a minimum of six (6) years of sales /use tax experience preferably in a large corporate environment; experience in multi-operation locations highly preferred. Management/ leadership experience highly preferred. Experience in property tax highly preferred, but willingness to learn, understand and apply principles of property tax is required.
