Position Overview:

The Associate Underwriter on the Casualty Team supports the evaluation, selection, and pricing of casualty insurance risks such as general liability, products liability, commercial auto, and umbrella/excess policies. Working under the guidance of senior underwriters, the Associate Underwriter performs risk assessments, analyzes underwriting data, builds broker and client relationships, and contributes to achieving profitable underwriting results.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review and analyze new business and renewal submissions for casualty risks under the supervision and guidance of more senior underwriters.
  • Prepare quotes, endorsements, binders, and policy documentation, ensuring accuracy and compliance with underwriting guidelines.
  • Gather and assess relevant information, such as applications, loss runs, financial statements, and inspection reports.
  • Evaluate risk characteristics, loss exposures, and recommend appropriate terms, coverage, and pricing as per company appetite.
  • Assist underwriters in negotiation with brokers, responding to inquiries and providing excellent customer service.
  • Maintain accurate underwriting files and documentation in company systems.
  • Monitor pending quotes, policy changes, and other outstanding items to ensure timely follow-up and processing.
  • Collaborate with underwriting assistants, claims, loss control, and other internal teams.
  • Stay current on industry trends, regulations, and the Canadian casualty insurance market.
  • Participate in training and professional development initiatives to build technical expertise and advance underwriting authority.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education, ideally in business, insurance, or a related field.
  • 1-3 years of experience in insurance (commercial lines, underwriting support, or brokerage experience preferred).
  • Progress toward or completion of CIP or CAIB designation is an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of casualty insurance principles and commercial lines products preferred.
  • Effective analytical skills, attention to detail, and judgment.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to multitask and prioritize.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; professionalism in broker and client interactions.
  • Solid computer literacy, including MS Office and insurance management systems (e.g., Guidewire, Policy Works, TAM).
  • Bilingualism (English/French) may be considered an asset.
