Job Summary

Recognizes, manages and rehabilitates injuries to professional, amateur and recreational athletes. Provides techniques for prevention of injuries.

                         

Job Details

Responsibilities:

  • Prepares athletes for practice or competition.
  • Evaluates and manages injuries and determines whether a referral is necessary.
  • Maintains a medical file on each athlete and acts as a liaison between the physician and the athlete.
  • Implements treatment and rehabilitation programs under the supervision of a physician.
  • Develops conditioning programs for injured and non-injured athletes.
  • For Athletic Trainers working in the Clinical/Ambulatory setting may perform the following:

  • Performs a comprehensive health maintenance review and provides an oral report to the physician regarding patient history and chief complaint.
  • Scribes documentation of the visit into the medical record by remaining in the exam room with the physician as the patient is treated.
  • Reviews post-visit instructions with the patient.
  • Assists with gathering data under the supervision of the physician or nurse.
  • Administers treatments under the direction of the physician.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree and completion of an Athletic Training Program accredited by Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.

Certifications:

  • Athletic Trainer Certification (ATC) certified by National Athletic Trainers Board of Certification (NATBOC).
  • State licensure as an Athletic Trainer (AT) if required by state law.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider.

Complexity of Work:

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
  • For the Clinical/Ambulatory setting:

  • Will be required to follow established protocols regarding scribing functions, and keep updated of changes as they occur.

Work Experience:

  • Participation in training programs related to the ATC field preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full body motion including handling and lifting up to 75 pounds.
  • Manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.
  • Requires standing, sitting, and walking for extended periods of time.
  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
  • May be required to drive to other locations.

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
