Job Summary

Custodial Workers clean and maintain the buildings, public areas and surrounding grounds of the Baltimore Convention Center.  The work of a custodian in this capacity does not involve any supervisory responsibilities.  Employees receive moderate supervision from the Operations Crew Leaders and Operations Supervisors.  Employees in this class work on a rotating shift basis (morning, afternoon and evening).  Work is performed both inside and outside the building. Employees will be exposed to inclement weather conditions when working on surrounding grounds.  The work of a custodian requires physical exertion that includes being on feet for the duration of shift.  The work of this individual involves evening, weekend, holiday, shift-work, and occasional mandatory overtime. 

Essential Functions

  • Sweeps, vacuums, dusts, mops, waxes and buffs floors, hallways, stairs and building interiors. 
  • Collects and disposes of waste and recycling. 
  • Maintains sanitary restrooms and fixtures.
  • Washes windows, walls and ceilings; polishes, display equipment and other objects as required. 
  • Dusts and polishes furniture and may remove furniture and equipment. 
  • Maintains supplies and materials.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or GED Certification.

* Commensurate experience will be considered in lieu of high school diploma

AND

Experience: One year of related experience.

OR

Equivalency Notes: Have an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses, Registrations, and Certificates: Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent driver's license and be eligible to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit. PROVISIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSES ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic custodial cleaning methods, materials, and techniques.  Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to operate and maintain non-complex hand and power cleaning tools and equipment.
  • Ability to walk long distances and remain in standing position for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time to pick up trash cans or litter.
  • Ability to climb multilevel stairwells.
  • Ability to obtain Basic Certified Custodial Technician certification.

Background Check

Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint screening, and must be successfully completed.

Probation

All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a 6-month mandatory probation.
